Is modified monotub less work than unmodified?

With unmodified monotubs, there's no labor required to modify the structure of the tub. Also increasing/decreasing FAE is more measurable since you just adjust the lid rather than using polyfill. However, it seems like there is more startup work and micro-adjustments in trying to properly dial in your tubs to your environmental conditions (adjusting lid, misting, fanning).

Whereas with modified monotubs, it seems like its more set and forget and you do not have to worry about dialing it in. The downsides as I see it are that you're putting huge holes into tubs (that could be used for other things later) and that measuring polyfill density can be a crapshoot.

Is this a fair assessment? What are people's thoughts and experiences on this?

I never had good luck with unmodified tubs. I mean they work but there is no fine tuning them to get great results, at least in my experience. I've been using something similar to this the past year and love it. No polyfil either. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26140339/fpart/1/vc/1/nt/13

I tried unmodified. Didn't end too well. I wouldn't blame the tub though. Could be genetics. 100% colonization but just wouldn't fruit.

Then just like herbnmyco, I tried this: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26140339/fpart/1/vc/1/nt/4

Never look back since.
