I would like to say it is the essence of my path but I don't know so I don't know if redgreenvines would critique me
but it is a nice and descriptive idea like a poem seems that way it describes a lot and covers a lot of meaning

I had lots of trips both good and bad in the same trip. Its less to do with dosage and more about set and setting. Dose less if your someplace anxiety induceing and dose more at places stress free. Over 3.5 grams can be scarry at points even in a good environment.

For question one on how to influence a trip there are a few facets I take into consideration. The very most important thing to understand is phsycadellics amplify the mood you are in as well as the ones running in the for-front of your mind were self preservation is concerned (ego).
Special forces such as the navy seals have method of "keeping their worlds small" which means to only attend and keep your thoughts on what you can change or control around you rather than the world. To keep your mind on the task at hand or as the saying goes, "do not let the enemy run rent free in your mind".

The mind is a wonder full servant but also a cruel master:
I have learned to avoid media, politics and things that honesty do not effect me for at least a day in advance. I let my dreaming state take care and organize that crap a night or two before. Sleep is also important, you want to be rested.

I cut down on processed foods because the body is working overtime to try process and metabolize the proteins. I guarantee if I eat a double quarter pounder from micky dee's,,, although it tastes good, I don't really feel to great for the next 12 hours and mushrooms are gonna amplify it to the point to were the purge is gonna be looping mind fuck fest.
I don't fast because hunger anxiety is also a recipe for a disaster. Tripping with hunger anxiety and stomach cramps is also a unneeded distraction. You do not just have 5-HT2A receptors in your brain that these substances bind to and your digestive system has lots of them. You don't feel hunger in your head nor anxiety and most migraine headaches have been proven to originate from the stomach.

There is a reason for that. Your stomach is considered your primal brain. Ever get those "gut feelings" you wish you listened to? Also I have found tripping while constipated isn't a good thing ether. I drink a nice glass of prune juice if I'm feeling backed up the night or morning before I plan on tripping.

Another thing is hydration, poor hydration will also be amplified during the experience and I believe from experience is the number one cause for lack of visuals, increased cramps and headaches. Your body needs plenty of water to efficiently move those building blocks and signals around and out. Your brain uses the most energy out of every organ in your body and on psychedelic's it is lit up like a Christmas tree.

Often times when I go over a problem while tripping it is a picture or geometric structure that answers my questions more than a thought. The thought is just the question per-say. I can guarantee 90% of all my difficult or uneventful trips lack any in your face visuals what's so ever because I'm trapped in my own thought loops/feelings. I stay inside myself rather then get out of my own idea of who I am. Surrender is key and it does take practice.

Another thing is dosage, with normal cubes anything under 3.5g amplifies the self preservation of your psyche rather than shutting it down from my experience. Sure 1-2 grams to get the jest of what higher doses are like is recommended but unless your good at meditation one is going to need a bit more oomph to break the ego barrier.

If I want a uncomfortable trip, I'll take under 3.5g of mushrooms. I personally found 4-10g is my area of being able to loose the grip of self preservation and into the realm of epiphanies and the rare mystical events that rock my boat.

After years of weekly/bi-weekly dosing from low to insanely high I have learned to not have expectations but to rather just simply have intent. Sometimes less is more and other times more is less.
Not every trip is going to give you what your expecting and that goes both for good and bad experiences.
Tripping is not for everyone just like rollercoasters.

In a interview with Kathleen Harrison she made a statement that made me laugh pretty good when she said, "mushrooms and ayahuasca are the masochists preferred phsycadellics because they have a way with being relentless and are often challenging.".

I personally don't worry whether the first half of the trip is going to be uncomfortable, in fact I expect it to be as it should be, it is called a purge (come-up) for a reason.
I will take 2-3 hours of hell to experience the next 4 of pure bliss and mysterious wonder. This is why I take higher doses,,, so the last half is as wonder full if not more than the first half was bad.

Taking the precautions to ensure your biological machine is running well as I stated above helps minimize the discomfort of the first half.

Practice makes perfect, take others advice with a grain of salt, they are not you nor have they witnessed your life's experiences. Take what works for you, discard what doesn't and get rid of expectations.

As for the last question, some people just wake up in the morning having never taken physcadellics in there life and decide, "I'm tired of this way im living" and change. Psycadellics are not a magic bullet but what is magical is how they can give you a third person perspective of yourself that can push you to the conviction that there is a better way. You have to really want something to overcome the hurtles that stand in your way and it is a long slow process.

Quite honestly I would quit tripping for a month or two if it gave me the opportunity to be in a controlled study, which begs me to question? How badly do you want to change? What is your true intent? (not trying to be dickish but it sounds like you slapped away a hand that was trying to help you. It may be something you might want to ask yourself again.)
