Cactus question
    #27075728 - 12/06/20 05:10 PM (3 years, 1 month ago)

Hi all,

I have recently become interested in the world of cacti.  I have acquired a few T. bridgesii cuttings and have a few questions for all you experts.

1. How should these cuttings be stored over the winter?  I have read varying opinions between potting the plants in a cool/dark place vs. leaving the cuttings wrapped in cardboard and potting/rooting them in the spring.  Is there a consensus here?  I'm in hardiness zone 5a so it will have to be indoors for sure.

2. How long should the cuttings be that I plant?  The ones I received were between 10-18 inches in length.  Should the entire cutting be potted or can/should I cut them shorter and pot/root each piece?

Thanks for any and all advice!

pot in dry soil and don't water, allow to root. keep in doors and allow any sunlight to hit it.

you can get away with cuttings of 6" size, usually, as long as the cuttings have decent water content to start off with. either way there will probably still be rooting.

if you wrap them up the will grow pups and be discolored and misshapen from lack of light

Thanks for the reply!

Should I trim off the dried-out end of the cutting before placing in soil or just put it in as it is?

No! When you put them into soil make sure that the bottom-end of the cutting is completly dry /callused.

When you cut the plants make sure the cutting surfaces dry as quickly as possible.
Some people even blow with a cold fan onto the cuts for a day or three, to speed things up.

Only pot dry cuts. Then don't water for several weeks, roots must have grown before watering. Better begin watering in spring. Usually you don't water them in winter anyway.

10-18 inches is a good height for a cutting to be potted.

Good to know.  The cut ends look healthy and calloused to my (admittedly untrained) eye, so that makes my job easier.

Thanks for the advice, guys.
