Using shroomery.org discussions in a non-profit zine
    #27074768 - 12/06/20 08:04 AM (3 years, 1 month ago)

Hello everyone.  My wife and I are starting up a small, non-profit 16-20pg zine to distribute to various places around our small town.  The town is very small with allot of culture and art and the idea is to inspire fringe and alternative thought and expression.

I wanted to ask the community here for permission to use shroomery discourse in our zine.  I've pm'd a couple of members who have posted in the solipsism thread for permission to use some of their posts but many of them haven't logged on in many years.  I am happy to cite and give credit [or not] and would be very grateful for the opportunity to share some of the discussions here in the off-topic threads.

Thanks everyone!

The people who would object don't matter in the grand scheme of things.

I think technically the original poster of anything retains the copyright unless they've agreed otherwise. Publishing something establishes copyright, there is no need to register or anything.

Not that there is likely to be any legal problem around this at all, but it would at least be courteous to ask each user you quote for permission.

Which solipsism thread? And why that thread specifically?

Thanatos would definitely never have a wife. Pretty sure he's lurking here somewhere, hopefully he sees this and reaches out to OP; for I've never known a man more obsessed with the subject!

Sounds like a cool project! When people post on this site, they retain the copyright to their work but they agree to let us share it on their behalf under the Creative Commons BY-NC-SA license. So, as long as your usage falls under the terms of the license (which it sounds like it does), no further permission is necessary. You only need to seek permission from the original author if you wish to use their work under different terms than those outlined in the license. Thank you for asking though!

Thanks everyone for the feedback and thoughts.  Yeah, so even though it's non-profit, it doesn't feel quite right using someone's intellectual discourse without permission.

I'm super excited about it.  As viraldrome stated, tactile, written art is really becoming lost and forgotten.  I'm actually building the zine such that the the first half talks about a subject with artwork placed inline with the text.  Then the 2nd half of the book is ruled with questions to encourage people to read then respond with their ideas and then leave it behind for others to read those responses, and so on.

So, if I have reached out to the owner of a post I would like to put in the zine, and received no response (bc they're "last seen" is something like 5 or 6yrs), you think I'd be ok to use it?

I'm kinda torn on this.  On one hand, we'll never make $$ on this endeavor (lose some, in fact, lol), but on the other hand I'm using someone else's ideas and thoughts without their permission.  Stupid conscious and all of its ethics .. haha.

I'm definitely not Thanatos but I'm going to have to search and see what that's all about. I'm guessing there's some juicy history behind that one. lol!

Sorry about that - I forgot there are a few..
This one but no specific reason really, other than that there are some posts I'd love to share via the zine.

i was literally about to post about this exactly, to cut to the chase

a series of books that could be indexed through a combination of chronology/category/user/topics, threads and pics posted here anonymously as is the understanding, what are the legal limits of this site as the average users 'see' it

if someone post as 'XYZ', does someone have to ask 'XYZ' if they can re-post something from half and a screw years ago?

Enlil and Ythan, what is this

I sometimes read medical reports and studies of the effects of psychedelics on (insert topic here).  Sometimes they cite Shroomery threads or polls. The key is they never call anyone out by name. They speak about our community in generalities.
