Hi STC, funny thing I have been working with fungi for many years but haven't really considered the "gendered" aspect of taxonomic nomenclature. As you probably know, botanical names are a mishmash of borrowed terms from many languages but (if they weren't originally from the Latin) they are all "Latinized" in terms of the forms of the names used. English isn't gendered the way Latin languages are and I suspect that the gender of a given species name is maybe just an accident of naming rather than an intentional "gendering" process (who the hell knows what's going on subconsciously though) - and I suspect that you might even find some botanical names in which the genus name is feminine (e.g. Lophophora)and the specific epithet is masculine (e.g. williamsii). Probably the best place to find an answer would be in a book on botanical Latin. For example, William Stearns' Botanical Latin.  Good luck R_D
