Saccharum giganteum

So, I found a huge stand of these growing this season, and they were beautiful! The blooms were a silvery metallic pink/purple. I have never seen anything like it!

Anyway, I can not for the life of my find any information on cultivating this plant, as I got several flower heads full of seeds.

Does anybody know about these, or know if cultivating them is similar to growing real sugar cane.

I really want to start a huge stand of these around my chain length fence, as a sort of privacy fence, but I don't know if I should direct sow them now, or wait until this spring. Heck, i just really would like to know if they have to be cold stratified, and then I'm sure I can take care of the rest

I didn't manage to make it back out to snap pics of the blooms before they went to seed sadly, but this is what they look like.

Not my picture.

Your most likely gonna want to propagate that threw root devision. Take big ol clumps or see if it has individual rhizomes. Is it native to your area?

Crap, I meant to do that today while I was out fishing! they are all still out there just standing tall too.

It is native to my area as far as I know, and it grows mostly in swampy areas around where I fish.

I'll see if I can cut some back, and pull up some with roots. Not sure if it makes rhizomes though. Either way, I think i will go that route instead.

Thanks for the advice buddy
