New to mycology, questions about setup
    #27073450 - 12/05/20 12:08 PM (3 years, 1 month ago)

Hey everyone, it's about time I hop on a forum and get some answers.

So I bought a grow kit and it blew me away. I ended up building a real diy FC because I was so fascinated by growing mushrooms. So far I've been taking grow kit blocks (blue oyster) after their 2nd fruit and breaking them up into pasteurized straw in buckets. The oat straw is from a coworker - I live rurally, surrounded by farms - and I've just heated it on the stove to 160-180F. And I was able to get 1lb of mushrooms on the first flush using my incredibly sketchy FC (not huge by any means but exciting proof of concept!).

In the meantime, I'm ordering parts for a more legit FC and more legit way of growing.

I've got:
- 3x3x5 vivosun tent
- 3 disc fogger HOH
- 80mm fan with controller HOH
- silver duct work

I've ordered a 6lb grain spawn of PO.

My questions are related to finishing the setup.
- what lights should I get for my tent? I want strip LEDs, but am confused by if I need 6500k or 480nm lights. So the RGB lights measure NM and the white LEDs measure k, are these the same?
- exhaust - what do I do here. I need a fan and some way to control the speed of an exhaust fan. Right now I'm really macqivering the fan for my FC and am pushing in FE but just letting is blown out the side, instead of pulling air out. Any help for what would be a good fan with speed control?
- I was trying to line up some hericium to grow and the seller mentioned it likes 60% moisture in the blocks - does this mean 60% RH? Can I grow hericium next to my PO? Or does it like it colder or less RH?
- humidity control - I want to snag a humidity controller. The wihi one from HOH looks decent, but I'm seeing other models that are a little better for my wallet, such as digiten brand. Any recommendations?

My overall goal is to learn how to grow mushrooms (it is so interesting!) And start selling them locally, hopefully growing a small business from there.

Ok, thanks for any and all help in advance, sorry for such a long post.
More questions are sure to come!

Pay no attention to the blue in the above pic that was an accdent.

I use 6500k fluorescent bulbs. I did not have good luck with the LEDs. I would look for 6500k led strip lights if you want LEDs...

https://www.amazon.com/s?k=led+strip+lights+6500k&i=tools&ref=nb_sb_noss

I am guessing PO is pink oysters?

I used a willhi controller for a long time it is not bad for the price but HOH rips you off...

https://www.amazon.com/WILLHI-Humidity-Controller-Humidification-Dehumidification/dp/B077FPTWLY/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=WILLHI+WH1436H&qid=1607233555&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExUTc4S1EyUTJKSlJKJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMjQ0NjQ5UUpZMTc2TVRBUUxIJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA1ODM0MjkyTlNOSFFUTUtOMjJQJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

You are going to need a few more things like an exhaust fan if you are growing oysters or Lions mane.

if you want to go cheap I would use a bilge fan for the exhaust they are cheap and they are water-resistant...

https://www.amazon.com/Attwood-1749-4-Blower-Resistant-4-Inch/dp/B003EX02DA/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=bilge+fan&qid=1607233889&sr=8-3

I would also suggest a circulation fan to move the air around so co2 does not build up around the mushrooms.

You will also need a cycle timer to bring on your exhaust 6 times an hour...

https://www.amazon.com/Multifunctional-Infinite-Programmable-Appliances-Protection/dp/B07LBBYPGG/ref=sr_1_10?dchild=1&keywords=cycle+timer&qid=1607234737&sr=8-10

If you need more help let me know or if you have questions just ask I will  do my best to help!

For the exhaust fan no need to control the speed you just turn on the fan for a little longer than the fan time that is needed to completely exchange the air in your tent. If you need help figuring that out let me know. If you want to control the speed of the fan that I gave you a link to you would just need a 12v rheostat.

A 60% moisture content refers to how much water is in the substrate. I would suggest you use hardwood fuel pellets they are much easier to use. You can supplement the pellets with soy hulls which is the best choice or you can use wheat bran or you can not supplement at all but your yields will suffer.

figure out Moisture content...

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26632628

Most mushrooms if not all will use a 60% moisture content.

The two strains will grow fine togeather.

Hi shroomsisay, same person different name (didn't like my initial try). Anyway, this is all really great info. Thanks so much.

For right now Im using straw only because I'm lacking funds to invest in a pressure cooker. I've seen someone use an instapot successfully and I have one of those, but it doesn't reach 15psi, only 10-11. My goal is to switch to hwfp and soy once I scrape up the dough those, so that's good to know about the 60%.

And PO referred to Pleurotus ostreatus, Blue oyster.

But I'll look into these links you posted, extremely helpful! And I'll pm with any questions I can think of.

Thanks again!

Question about that bilge fan. Does it get wired to a 2 prong plug? I can do that, but figure you might have some knowledge beyond my experience here.

And for lights, I notice a power button on the ones you linked. If I'm using lights with a timer, does a light with a power button come on automatically? I'm thinking it might just supply power, but not actually illuminate...

So if I were to go with 6500k fluorescent bulbs, what should I know? Just thinking I have a small FC and want some even lighting, and don't want humidity to kill the lights.

I would use a 5 amp 12v power supply because it is 12v it only uses 2 wires. But the plug to the power supply may or may not be 2 wires. It will most likely be a 3 prong. It just depends on which power supply you buy. Even with the power supply, it is about 1/2 the price of other water-resistant fans.

I was in a hurry those are not the lights you would want you want something waterproof or you will have problems I don't think these come with a power pack so you will need another power pack and you can not use the same one for the fan. Realize these lights will not be nearly as bright as fluorescent lights...

https://www.amazon.com/GuoTonG-Flexible-Waterproof-Daylight-Lighting/dp/B075LB9HK2/ref=sr_1_8?crid=2QP135RTUQJ8L&dchild=1&keywords=6500k+led+light+strip+waterproof&qid=1607286726&s=hi&sprefix=led+strip+lights+6500k+wate%2Ctools%2C225&sr=1-8

I myself would use the fluorescent lights when I used the LEDs I had nothing bet problems you can build a waterproof box around the light if you want to do that we can talk about it.

The pressure cooker does not have to reach 15 psi. If it does not reach 15 psi you can just run it longer. But I doubt you would be able to fit bags in an instant pot it just is not big enough.

My name used to be HolyShiitake but I lost the password.

Probably best to refer to the blue oyster as blue oyster if you want more people to answer you. Refer to shiitake as shiitake and so on.

Thanks again for the advice. So with flourescent, would just getting one for the top of my FC be enough? Or do I need multiple?

I think one of these will be enough for that size tent. Hang it about a foot in front of your shelf on the ceiling and you should be good. But plug the light in and test the light coverage so you place it right the 1st time.

https://www.lowes.com/pd/Lithonia-Lighting-1233-Linear-Shop-Light-Common-4-ft-Actual-5-5-in-48-in/1000410165

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Philips-40-Watt-4-ft-Linear-T12-ALTO-Fluorescent-Tube-Light-Bulb-Daylight-Deluxe-6500K-2-Pack-543405/308641089

then if you want to build a box to keep it away from moisture I would buy this...

https://www.amazon.com/Kidkusion-Indoor-Outdoor-Banister-Guard/dp/B0078MQDFY/ref=sr_1_4?crid=26MPDLJLGRKPN&dchild=1&keywords=clear+banister+guard&qid=1607309083&sprefix=clear+banister+guar%2Cindustrial%2C177&sr=8-4

If you build the box for the light from wood I would buy a tube of silicone and mineral spirits. Thin out the silicone with the mineral spirits and paint the wood.

One more ha. Is 8 hours of light sufficient? Or should I be in the 12-16 range?

I do 12 hours on/off. My KWH cost of electricity is like 0.08 cents a KWH so it cost me like 8 cents a day to run a 2 bulb 40-watt fixture. I actually use 4 bulbs so it costs me 16 cents a day. To figure out the cost of electricity you would have to look and see how much a KWH (1000 watts per hour) costs you on your electric bill.

There is another one that I use to use but I can't find it.

good luck and I hope you the best!
