Spawing to Straight Cow Poo
    #2707267 - 05/20/04 06:57 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Ok, so whats the Deal? Is using straw an absolute must? I've read that cow poo tends to pack down real tight which can hamper colonization, but am scared to use straw because of everything I've read about contamination & endospores.

I'll use straw if I have to, but what about using verm or peatmoss instead?

And if I do use straw what should I do, pasturize it at the same time as the poo, or should I soak then pastureize?

Ummm... no response?

O.K. , hows this... I also have a bag of organic compost. What if I just mix the two together and pasturize? Would that work?

Well yes you would want to mix the straw with the poop before you pasteurize because that is how you would lay it out anyway! I do not know if you can use just poo though!

Well DeadShaman, if you are spooked by the problems of straw there is no reason why you couldnt substitute something else in its place.

The fact is that cow poo will pack down and make it difficult for the myc to succesfully colonize it during the two week window provided by proper pasteurization.  I see no reason why you couldnt use the verm or the peat. I would suggest the verm for shear simplicity ,as the peat would increase the pH of the substrate and inhibit shroom growth.  THis can be avoided by the use of a buffering agent to slowly basify the substrate in a slow release fashion. Just mix in your ammendment of choice until the subsrate feels nice and airy. You want it to be pretty fluffy to allow for easy colonization.

If you have access to horse poo you can forgo all of this,as it doesnt need straw added to achieve ideal consistancy. It is just fine all by itself!

Good Luck!
MYKEY

I'll go ahead and use the verm them, unless I get a chance to get some straw tomorrow then I'll try that.

Once I get a good mix, what should I do? Boil or bake? Boiling seems to be what most people do, but I know the people who bake swear by it. Does it really matter?

For bulk? You're crazy. Pasteurize it in a pillow bag, no boiling.

You know there are plenty of teks you can look into that will give you all this info. Just try to do a little research....you'd be surprised what this place has on document. Good luck and welcome!
