i have regrettably smoked weed regularly (every day minus a couple breaks) since i was a teen. ive known for a long time how dependent ive been on it, but have never made strong attempt to stop. that changed this past weekend and ive basically completely stopped. i realized the negative effects were far outweighing the positive and it is time.
I find the two biggest hurdles i am having is sleep and appetite. sleep was the reason i started using so regularly in my teen years. i had always struggled with falling asleep and obviously weed solved that problem.
since stopping i have also completely lost my appetite. ive realized how much i was depending on it to be tired or hungry. or at least how my body adapted to relying on it. Ive always worked out daily and have worked very hard to gain the muscle mass that i have, which is difficult for me because ive always had very low body fat and a high metabolism. im already losing weight which i dont like.
i guess i am wondering if anyone has had a similar experiences with weed dependancy, and if there is anything that helped them during this process?

The only thing I experienced when stopping for a pee test was that sleeping was very difficult. I didn't sleep at all for 2 days, dozed off for an hour at a time for weeks, and then was finally able to get a solid night's sleep after about a month of abstinence.

thanks for sharing your experience! thats what i was assuming. over time things would go back to normal.
other than exercise which i get plenty of, i am curious if anyone has found any remedies to make the transition easier.

To stop your mind wandering watch your breathing and you'll drift off to sleep easier. Your dreams will probably be a bit more vivid but it settles after a while. You may also feel mildly depressed for a while and even foggy but that too passes. Keep with the exercise and your body will naturally be hungry. It takes a bit of time but time flies.

melatonin is good if you're really struggling to sleep, I just take half and I'm usually out in 30mins, but works best if you use it occasionally not every night. Also eating earlier and not looking at any screens for an hour or two before sleep help a lot.
also when you quit -in my experience- you will likely adapt really quickly, so these issues will likely not persist more than a week

Exercise and sleep hygiene helped me when I stopped smoking weed. Like Ezuma said, eating early and stopping screen time before sleep time is important.
Another thing is to build healthy associations with bed. When I smoked heavily I'd spend a lot of time in bed watching things on my laptop. Making sure I keep bed for sleep and love meant that I associated bed with sleep much more than staying up and watching shows.
Reading is a great sleep aid. Don't stress about reading anything consequential or serious. Pick up some fun stories. Terry Pratchett's Discworld books have been a great friend to me over the years.

I quit mmj a few months ago and I still crave it when Im stressed but i just find ways to keep busy or my mind on other things

I was in a similar boat, i had been a daily smoker for 10 years, i had known for years that i needed to quit and that it was affecting me more detrimentally, and earlier this year i finally quit. When i quit, i was also taking some Lemon EO in a capsule, and noticed the terpene content in the Lemon EO (the same terpenes also found in Cannabis like Limonene and Alpha-Pinene) was giving me the same terpene feelings/effects that i was getting from Cannabis, and so i didn't notice any withdrawal symptoms, i still got the benefits from the terpenes and the Cannabis just faded away, i was quite surprised that i had no withdrawal symptoms or anything, it was very easy to quit. So the terpenes i'm pretty sure is what helped me. After quitting, i did smoke Cannabis a few more times but each time i was reminded of why i quit and i felt no pull towards using it again. So after a few months of being clear from Cannabis, i had heard about Delta 8 THC here on the Shroomery and decided to give that a go, and i'm glad i did because it's much cleaner/clearer and more functional for me than Cannabis and it gives me no anxiety or paranoia unlike Cannabis. So i've been exploring Delta 8 the last few months and it's seemed to be doing me good so far, which is awesome, but at some point i'm gonna stop using Delta 8 for a bit, and keep it for times when i really want it instead of regularly, and maybe approach it more like i would Alcohol or something.
But yeah, for sleep, Melatonin is alright, or maybe try some Lemon Balm tea, for appetite Lemon Balm may help too, or some of the terpenes may help, i know when i first tried Delta 8 it gave me the munchies like a mofo, not so much now though lol. But yeah usually those who have withdrawal effects after quitting only experience them for the first few days or a week or two, after that things should go back to normal.

psysearch- thats good advice thank you. i suffer from what ive been told is mild depression since the death of my mom and i actually found weed was making that worse the majority of the tim. that is one thing i have noticed actually get better since stopping. even though its only been a couple days. energy levels are much higher and im less paranoid/analytical about my life which is nice. looking forward to the slight anxiety and these other symptoms to subside though!
EZUMA- ive been reading about melatonin and am going to give it a shot tomorrow when im able to go to the store and get some. yes, i will only use it as a last resort id like to avoid becoming dependent on any other substance for sleep. screen time is something i didnt consider. i will try to hold back from my usual phone/netflix routine. I am relieved to hear these symptoms will likely be short lived, thank you.
COVERSALL - I like the idea of creating a different subconscious relationship with bed. that never occurred to me. i have a tonne of books, most of which sit on the shelf. time to wipe the dust off! thank you
ADRENOCHROME - yes i have also found staying busy is key during the day.
ENKIDO -yes i have already noticed my quality of sleep improve. what little im getting that is. ya it does suck im thinking it will subside. i mean im still getting 2-3 meals in a day but maybe half the coloric intake i had while smoking. no it isnt the food. i eat a healthy & diverse diet.
SABNOCK- thanks for taking the time to write that all out, i will definitly look into lemon EO, lemon balm tea and melatonin. id like to stay away from any substitutes for cannabis though, i dont want to become reliant on anything else. im glad you found somthing that worked for you. reassuring to hear it can be done!

again thanks to everyone. thankful for the community here on the shroomery. i will try to remember to update this as time moves forward and i notice any changes to what im reluctant to call my withdrawal haha cheers to healthier minds!

i have the same thing going on when i quit: lack of appetite and difficulty falling/staying asleep/waking up even more frequently (i have sleeping issues too)
the appetite usually comes back after a few days, sometimes even on the first evening already
the sleep thing takes a while
but after a month you can feel the new cleansed you shining through the sticky resin crust

Last night i woke at 3am and couldnt fall back for a while

Some night time tea and reading and no food and no electronics at night

I quit smoking weed 4 years ago. It was a 10 year habit. I had similar withdraw symptoms that really only lasted a few days but maybe lingered a week or two. For sleep Id recommend taking a couple benadryl an hour before bed for a little while. That helped me get to sleep. The appetite will come back sooner than later. Exercise helps stimulate appetite and makes you feel better too.
For me it was important to find a worthwhile replacement for smoking pot. so I started working out at the gym. I think a healthy hobby of any kind is good because the only cravings I would have were when I was bored staying busy helps until they go away Goodd luck!

Enkido- Ya man its been a mindfuck for me to put it bluntly. my stomach feels empty but half the time theres no feeling of hunger, and when it comes it is subdued. I think it will come back in the coming days.
very similar situation for me. i think i started the habitual smoking around 14. really wish i didnt as id love to know what id be like having waited. hindsight is 20/20.
Rise against- that a good idea ill grab some nyquil or something with a antihistamine like that for the nights that are really rough, good call. yes i already have quite a few hobbies like woorking out, hunting fishing (waiting for the ice currently) and things of that nature and plan on delving into all of them now that im stopping. i always thought weed made those things more enjoyable ( minus hunting i never take anything before i go out with my bow) but im realizing it didnt. i find the same thing im not even really thinking about weed while im busy. its when im bored that i want to smoke. i appreciate the advice and well wishes!

Alright I have had my own struggles with weed as well. ever since 2012 I have been smoking weed pretty regularly and heavily. there was a period when I needed to pass a drug test and stopped and there may have been some periods where I could not get my hands on some and had to wait but for the most part I was a heavy smoker. I still am if i get my hands on it.
I stopped mostly because the cost, eating horrible food when high, and the laziness. I find that I eat much healthier when sober and do not crave sweets or greasy food. I enjoy cooking now and trying to eat somewhat healthy. I would smoke a lot and then just eat a whole bag of candy or chips. Its actually what contributed to the 14 or so cavities I had filled a couple years ago.
I also was very lazy. some people say they can smoke and then go to the gym but that has never really been the case for me. only an hour or so after smoking a just get slumped out and fall asleep around noon. I will admit that it does suck trying to sleep that first week or two but once you see how awesome dreams become its actually better than being high. I got into running and weights to make myself more tired.
I had to stop when i realized that i am putting off relationships with loved ones and ignoring improving myself because I just want to get high. i can not have thc products or weed in my possession or I will use it every 30 minutes until its gone.

Quitting weed is always a good idea. Your life can only get better. I had different issues when quitting, I was actually sleeping too much rather than unable to sleep. If you are struggling to sleep I suggest drink a herbal infusion before sleep. Make your own mix of all sedative herbs that you can find. You can get some decent ready mixed teabags but if you can find loose leaf or flower then take those instead. I use use camomile, lemon balm and mint. You can also try valerian root extract - load it up heavy dosed for the first 3 days to make it work, then lower the dose slightly.
If any of those don't help then get melatonin and eat 2-5mg a few hours before sleep. If 5mg of melatonin doesn't knock you out then I don't know what would... With melatonin be prepared to wake up randomly at night and feeling fully rested, but ignore it and just close your eyes, you fall asleep again instantly.
You can also try a breathing technique. It is so simple that I even feel embarrassed saying it is my own invention... Simply lay down on your back and breathe in the same way that humans do whilst asleep. I'm pretty sure we know the sound of it and that rhythm. Just tune into it and it should take you out. It works for me. You can combine this with the sedatives.
Apart from that I find that some music just knocks me out. There are two albums that I use:
Bohren and der club of gore - Black Earth Rhythm and sound - Rhythm and sound (2001)
Whatever you do, don't touch xanax or any other pharmaceutical shit.
