Where to buy cheaper autoclave
    #27071051 - 12/04/20 01:16 AM (3 years, 1 month ago)

Anyone have any suggestions on cheaper autoclaves? Would LOVE some help, want to get a good project going but don’t want to “stand in my kitchen” like I’m yo Gotti or some shit.

Why do you need to stand in your kitchen, get it up to pressure and go be productive, wash jars, spawn tubs, do no mycology at all whatever you want. The pc is still doing its job even if you arnt in the room. Presto 23qt best bang for your buck.

I have that presto, honestly I would just fuck around in my bedroom and check on it here and there but now I moved and for reasons need an autoclave... they’re pricey though.

:whathesaid:
Pesto 23qt is probably best you're gonna get as far as cost\usefulness. Not need to monitor it. After one or two, you won't even need to check to gauge. You'll know what temp\setting to set your range to maintain the temp\pressure you need. For me, it was high until some venting then turn down to 2 and walk away until my ringer went off, then kill the heat and forget about it until morning. Even my smaller presto with no gauge didn't need constant attention.

Sorry, didn't see your comment while writing mine. An electric got plate to run PC in your room or whatever would be a lot cheaper than an autoclave. I really don't think they make "cheap" autoclaves.

I might’ve not worded that correctly. I’ve used my presto a bunch already but need an automatic pressure cooker so I don’t have to use the stove. Sucks but I have a weird situation now, for a little bit.

Maybe look into instant pots than. Will still vent steam but it's automated. However, they don't quite hit 15psi so sterilization can be a bit hit or miss. I used one for a while. Other down side, they are very small for the price. I think it was like$90 for the 6qt

I was looking at a prevac sterilizer but yea I dont have 5g laying around so I'm still window shopping. But for real tho get a darn hotplate, they are under 100$ and will do whatever you want to do with a pc. Don't buy the cheapest one cuz the pc full of jars is heavy as shit and you don't want to damage it, made that mistake once already.

https://www.allamericancanner.com/Electric-Benchtop-Autoclave-Sterlizer.htm
If it were me I'd go buy 5 hot plates and 5 pesto's but if you don't want either of those its going to cost you.

I use an AA 941 on a hotplate. Nothing wrong with that

But I just run my presto 23q on my kitchen stove.

Avoid glass tops and\or induction plates. Glass, obviously, because PC s are heavy and induction because they don't work with aluminum alloys that many PC's and pots are made of. If you know you're is SS then it will work but not worth the price.

cadco hotplates are supposed to be the bees knees.

don't look all that special, but that's probably what I would purchase if I was gonna buy a hotplate.

They make an induction presto now, but they're probably sold out like regular prestos and AA pressure cookers are basically everywhere and have been for the last few months.

I use a 23quart on my glass top stove. They don't weigh all that much. The AA 941 on the other hand is a totally different beast... with 48+ lbs of grains and the weight of the PC it is like easily 90-100lbs

I use this hotplate - https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01IA3H8QM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I don't recommend using a fully loaded AA 941 on it for safety reasons but you can rig up something to make it so the weight of the pressure cooker is supported by something else, allowing it to barely touch the hot plate without really weighing down on it. No I don't even do that. It has held up to my AA fully loaded for over 20 cycles, it will handle a presto 23q with no issues.

Just realized it's a lot more expensive than when I purchased it. But you could find something similar for much cheaper, whatever you got linked to for $40 will work just fine. The one I use is rated at 1300W and although it takes a little while to get going, it gets an AA 941 up to pressure with no issue.

An empty 23qt isn't too heavy but fully loaded with grain is a substantial amount of mass to put in an area to size of a hot plate. Stove top glass can handle a bit more;built to hold 4 full pots at once by default. Not saying it will break first time, just a suggestion to avoid another setback for the OP. They are using grain and running a presto so trying to give the bullet points of things to consider.
