Oyster spore flu like symptoms?

I went into my FC the other day without a respirator where about 30 bags of blue oyster were fruiting and about 4 hours later started feeling really ill. Achy joints, a headache, tons of respiratory mucus, shortness of breath and a fever. I felt like crap. Pretty much flu like symptoms. I was laid up on the couch for the entire evening and had to go to bed at 8:30pm. The next day I was totally fine except for a mild headache. I had this happen to me once before and thought it was related to the oyster spores, but this has confirmed it. I for sure won’t be going into my FC without a mask again.
Have any of you guys experienced symptoms like this from oyster spores? I’m just curious... a web search yielded a little bit of relevant information, but I don’t always trust medical information I find online.

I experienced such symptoms when I had a wet-wall due to pipe burst inside the wall. I suppose it does not matter which spores you breathed in, oysters or mold.

I believe RogerRabbit quit growing oysters for that reason. He switched over to shiitake. Fungal lung infections can be serious.

Marty Mycfly was exposed and then couldn’t even work around the oysters after as the symptoms would flair up when he got near them, iirc. Might search his posts for more on that. Apparently it becomes almost an allergic reaction.

It's not a fungal lung infection. It's an allergy you've develop over time. Can be quick if you're around spores a lot, mushroom farm workers can get it within weeks if they are exposed hours at the time.
Many if not most mushroom farmers have developed spore allergies, most against Pleurotus, but Shiitake if bad as well. Always were an good respirator, full face one would be even better.

yes, once you have it, there's no way of getting rid of it. it will always get worse. sporeless oysters for the win!

Oy! That's terrible news... And also to be expected I guess. I remember reading about RogerRabbit having this issue years ago. I just didn't realize how intense it is! It felt more like a flu than anything. And yes! It does indeed seem like high time to start using that sporeless oyster culture you sent me.

they look a bit funny but the fact that you don't have to worry about sporedrops is much more important.

I used to but not anymore. the gene responsible for the sporulation is in someway connected or the same as the gravitropist gene. so instead of growing upwards, they grow in all directions.

better to compare filter efficiency and spore size to be sure.

Gravitropist? Is that what’s responsible for them all growing in correct relationships to gravity?
