Sounds like an early 2000's nu metal band name lol.
Or early 2000's AIM screen name.

Haven't seen it in a long time, I should re-watch. There are other Cronenberg movies I like better (Videodrome, The Brood, The Fly, Scanners) but the umbilical looking tech was very Cronenberg. A couple of years ago I saw some props up for sale on one of those movie memorabilia sites.
Story wise I just remember it being similar to other "simulation within a simulation" confusing mindfuck movies.
I have an uncle who worked on a couple of Cronenberg movies in the 80s, The Fly and Dead Ringers.

eXistenZ started out rough for me, but it didn't take long until I was on board. Then when the Chronenbergs showed up I about shit my pants. I never understood that reference in Rick and Morty. I paused the movie and immediately ran up stairs to tell my wife, she just rolled her eyes. I know I already mentioned the the sexual side with the bio ports, but the odd sexuality of the controllers and many other subtle aspects have always kind of intrigued me. I guess the implication is that virtual reality likely will have a major use for the sexually frustrated. I also love the guy who installs the black market bio port. That actor pops up with that sort of character in multiple movies.
I tend to add a lot of sci fi type movies to my collection, but I haven't found anything very good recently.

I also watched Videodrome right after eXistenZ. I loved it, great movie as well. Didn't quite tickle me the same way eXistenZ did but I really enjoyed it. I've seen the Fly, also great. Never seen The Brood or Scanners, those will be next on my list. I'm definitely a Chronenberg fan now.
Videodrome is cool because the James Woods character and the media pundit guy are both modeled after real people. Moses Znaimer founded the Toronto UHF station CityTV. Part of their hook was late night soft core porn, often with some kind of murder based plot. The pundit dude is supposed to be Marshall McLuhan, who is best known for the line "The medium is the message".
The moral I guess is that the media we consume alters us permanently. From a religious perspective it has the potential to damage your "soul". But a lot of Cronenberg's own stuff can alter the viewer in ways they may not entirely like. There are a couple I'd probably opt to un-watch, Dead Ringers and Shivers.

Cool!
My wife is a movie/pop culture beast and we have a fairly stout movie collection as a result.

That whole Moses/City TV thing went over a lot of people's heads, I have seen a bunch of people speculate on the religious meaning behind Videodrome because they didn't know who Moses Znaimer was.
The Japanese porn dealer was played by David "let them eat tuna" Tsubouchi a member of Mike Harris's Ontario government

His son Brandon Cronenberg made Possessor (2020) which rules.

I should watch eXistenZ again, it's been a while

I was not aware of the Tsubouchi connection but I do remember him from the Harris years.
I also did not realize that Cronenberg had a son who made movies, sounds cool.

Is this a Canadian thing that a lot of people won't get, kind of like the entire Wayne's World Donut shop situation?

Not sure but I think non-Canadian audiences at the time may have had some familiarity with McLuhan.
