Monos...where am i going wrong?

So Ive been growing for a good little while now. I understand the basics and have had much success with grain to shoeboxes. After doing that for quite some time i decided to move to monos and have had nothing but issues ever since. Ive lost 3 of 9 from the current batch. And this is after atarting from scratch after lsoing a bunch last time. My grains are good, the sub colonizes fine. This most recent tub even had a ton of large pins before trich started growing on the surface. They would have been done in like 3 days. Its only in the fruiting stage every damn time! After all the hard work and waiting is done and then this bullshit. The contam rate is crazy with the monos. Meanwhile I can grow shoeboxes with virtually no issues. I cant figure out what the problem is. Please tell me you guys have some ideas. Id be more than happy to just stick with shoeboxes but its not meeting my quantity need with the limited space I have available.

Your spawn is most likely dirty if it's getting trich before pins show up. Anything more would just be a guess since you did not provide any information about the environment, teks used, substrate, how the spawn was made or any pics.

I dont think its the spawn but you're right. I should have given more details. Im growing in a bathroom that we dont use and have been for quite some time. Here is a pic of how I was storing the 9 monos. Of course the tape was removed and replaced with polyfill when time to fruit. The room is clean and stays around 68-72 degrees. I use ambient light from the window in the room and there is a rotating stand fan in the room for air flow. I noticed on the last go round a few things. 1. I got trich in about half the tubs after putting into fruiting, usually about the time pins start showing up. 2. The ones that grew didnt flush as thick as my shoeboxes normally do. 3. It took several days longer for pins than the shoeboxes. 4. Some hollow stems. 5.Fuzzy feet. This made me wonder about FAE and whether lack thereof was stunting growth. Im now reading a post from RR about stale air and lack of FAE in itself can cause trich and Im wondering if thats the issue. There are 6 holes total. 1 at top of each smaller end and 2 on each longer side about 1" above the substrate. Clearly the lids are on tight as they have the weight of the other tubs on them. I mist and fan each tub twice daily. Could FAE be the issue, and if so, how can i increase FAE?

Do the same spawn used for monos also contam with shoebox? Unless you can say that it does, the idea that spawn and grain prep is the issue sounds most likely if stuff is contamed pre flush 1
Fae is increased by bigger holes, stronger air currents etc

Well not even all of the monos contam...just some of them. But yes, i feel like last time I did use aome of the same spawn for ahoeboxes and they turned out much better. I still have a ton of jars going from these same masters. I can try a few boxea and see. The holes I have in the mono id say are about the size of a half dollar. Is that too small?

Misting may be causing problems. Droplets can damage and slow down the hyphia development. Second thought I'd what is your spawn\sub ratio? The fact you say they take longer to pin makes me think perhaps a lower spawn ratio and delays from too much tending may be giving any contams the extra time they need to take hold a wreck shit. I am by no means an expert but I had best results from monos by set and forget and going straight to fruiting conditions at spawning; no tape. Just mix spawn in sub, psuedo case, and forget about it. No misting\fanning, nothing. Also, I always used MP tape so I have no direct experience with poly but have you dialed in the poly for your monos? This could also be causing issues with moisture\FAE which again could be causing delays and giving contams the edge.
I know that's a lot of ifs and maybes and coulds... Hope some of it can be helpful. šš

What was the source of the culture? How did you verify that the culture was clean? What does the grain look like during and at full colonization? What substrate did you use and how did you prepare it?

monotubs arent meant to be fanned and misted, that is the whole point that you dial it in with polyfill and forget, and you would only mist once in between a flush. you also would case for this reason. your fan is oscillating, this is a mistake, needs to not oscillate and be facing the wall towards the tubs but not directly at them.

It could be that thereās a small amount of mold or whatever in the spawn, and itās basically in a race with the myc.
Idk what ratios youāre using but shoeboxes tend to colonize quickly so they mold less often. If youāre using more sub per spawn in the monos then that extra bit of time it takes to colonize could be giving mold the space it needs to get established.
This seems to be more common when spawn is from g2g also. The mold in the master jar takes a while to get going and so the myc claims enough grain to suppress it, but then when you g2g it the mold is free to spread again just enough to make the jars look ok but outcompete the myc when they hit the coir.
All this stuff is just my theories based on what Iāve seen here and in my own grows, so who knows whatās really going on.

That part about the master grain jars. That there is your problem.

Spawn ratio for both has been 1:1.5 spawn to substrate. For the monos it has been 5 qt spawn and 7.5 qt sub. Shoeboxes are 2 qts spawn and 3 qt sub. Sub is CV from Damions 50/50 coir tek.

And here is the pic of a fully colonized jar of the spawn.

I appreciate the responses. I'm sure I will figure out what the problem is but still not there yet. I remembered...I did spawn 3 shoeboxes from the exact same grain and put them into fruiting today. Will see how those go vs the monos and let you know. Here are photos of the colonized subs I spawned on 11/26. At this point I case with a thin layer of dry verm and moisten it heavily. Always worked great for my shoeboxes but it ok to do this for monos or could that also be an issue? I think the colonized subs look ok which is again why I dont necessarily think the grain is the issue here.

An update on the monos as well. While I have lost most of the tubs Im hoping to get at least the first flush off these 2. May be race against the contam clock at this point.

Iām just wondering does a casing layer of vermiculite help fruit a tub better with less aborts?

Luckily those 2 made it out seemingly fine. Some big ass fruits too. Damn shame. Should have had 9 like this. Dammit man!

Right on man, glad you got something out of them. It's all a learning experience. Enjoy the fruits of your labor and start making the next ones better.
