Do you guys ever get rhizomorphic mycelium on your agar plates with this species? Because after many transfers, my mycelium always looks wispy. So I'm wondering

Rhizomorphs aren’t a tool in every fungi’s toolbox. Some species won’t throw rhizomorphs out ever. Never seen rhizo growth on pans, tamps or semps. Doesn’t mean they can’t go rhizo, but I’m assuming they probably prefer not to

Thanks a lot for the reply Dude! That's reassuring for me, as I'm new to this species.

Is wispy the right word for semp myc? It seems rather tomentose for me. Pans are wispy to me.
My 3 bags smelled off and weren't moving after 2 months in fruiting chamber. Mixed 'em all in a cloth bag with some manure. Going to throw it in the garage and neglect it. It's gonna freeze.
Next bags about ready. I still want to neglect a bag for invitro fruits. Tray or shoebox? Treat it like pans or cubes?

I haven't grown Pans yet, so I can't compare. But yes, tomentose might be a better word.
Natalensis (and Cubensis) mycelium is so different from one agar plate to another. As for Semp: they all look the same to me. Hence my previous question.
I don't even get the growth rings I do with Tampanensis & Mexicana.
I'm choosing which agar plate to put on rye based on colonization speed, and that's about it. So far, I haven't had any agar pins after leaving T1&2 plates alone for ~2 months.
We'll see what the shoebox and the Pasty EZD will do in a few days - but I feel like I'm kinda blind testing mycelium with this species

Buddy gave me some Convexa LC, so put a bit on some plates to ensure it was clean. I got too excited though and just put the rest to grain at the same time. YOLO

My spores from Ambrose germed in less than 2 days! Absolute insanity. I'm finally in the game, guys!

I'm jealous Adas. My hail mary attempt of loading the spore print into a syringe, letting it soak, then knocking up BRF cakes has not worked so far either. I should have a print in my mailbox from Rocky that I'm picking up this weekend so hopefully I'll be about a week behind you. Good luck with your grow!

I am beginning to suspect that the spores of Semp and Tamp varieties are more susceptible to aging than other spore prints.
I got good germination from all of the prints that Ambrose generously shared with me last year, but I can't get any of them to germ a year later. They were kept in a drawer right next to my own tamp prints and PE swabs that I had no trouble germing in the same sessions. The tamp prints that did work are the next generation from the prints from Ambrose, so fresher. About 4 months old versus 14 months.
I still have some living myc in jars and a tub from the first Semp germination, so I am going to try to take a bit back to agar and see if I can get started again from there.

Some species definitely have a short shelf-life. But you can freeze prints and hopefully prolong their lifespan, and potentially reduce germination time. See my thread about freezing spores. I think these Subtrop spores could have frozen during transit (very likely), so maybe that's why they germinated so fast, similar to my Tamp experiment?
EDIT: Please guys, feel free to perform your own experiments with freezing spores and contribute to my thread so we can have the info in one place. As far as I know, I'm the first one to have described this phenomenon so let's do some science!

That's the stuff! I'm really digging how voracious it is. I did a bag of coir and hay, demolished. Bag of manure/hay/coir/verm, demolished.
This time around I'm leaving one bag to do it's thing. Other bag made 1 shoebox, 3 trays, and a bag. Was a bit lazy and just mixed CVG/spawn in a bag and called it good. Rest of trays/boxes were mixed with CVG, cased with CVG, or left alone to be cased with 50:50.
