my first semps surface <3... and the smell, so different... this shit is looking so good that I'm afraid of messing it up by having my first true casing attempt... All I could get my hands on was cactus soil: white moss turf (95%) and sand (5%); PH 5,5 - 6,5... should i go for it or let it ride?
If you have verm just use that?

so you consider straight verm brought to field capacity to be a superior casing? can you elaborate? I just have very coarse vermiculite tho...

I’ve cased with straight coir, straight verm, and a traditional pH adjusted verm/peat casing. All fruited. The coir was the worst of the three. I absolutely recommend some type of casing.

I am just suggesting it’s less risk potentially than using what you have if you can’t get peat

I used pasteurized cactus soil for semp. Works fine. I screen out the large pieces of wood though.

I add a 1/2 inch of pasteurized coir every time. I do put the coir through a screen to remove large pieces and loosen it up. Field capacity coir pressed lightly. Spray the coir down to settle it. Wait patiently. I do have a bag of cactus soil to work with but haven’t opened it yet.
Prints are printing on foil and parchment paper. Harvested the large fruits. Keeping the stem butts for outdoors.

I used Peat/verm/lime less than 1/4" (probably less than 1/8" actually) just lightly sprinkled on top with some mycelium still peeking through then misted well.

My best has been peat/verm/hydrated lime. It’s what I use most often. I will say that semps seem to want to fruit no matter what I do to some degree or other. Whatever you try likely won’t be wrong, and may be better than anything we’ve used. Might even get an entirely different pheno. These are so different depending on conditions.

I did a thin layer of pasteurized peat/lime for this round. These are only a few inches tall in the end.
I have a bit of a theory that the reason they came out small this time could be that they were over saturated before and during pinning. They spent a long time as pins, grew very slowly in early stages, and by the time they were proper fruits they grew pretty quickly.
My previous grow was maybe 1/2 -3/4 inch of coir as a casing and they smashed through it and became a good size. Did the big coir casing act as a barrier to prevent over soaking the top of the colonised substrate? Hmm…

Cheers wavy. Yes they are small but quite thick and sturdy.
I love the orange colour of these. These are under a blue light so it’s muted quite a bit in these pics. Simultaneously pale and vivid, in my mind it’s like an orange version of nipple pink.

Thanks man. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I do believe that Semps and Zaps are fairly closely related?

Nice ones Telomere! I just read a paper on zaps and it mentioned that subtropicalis is very closely related to zapotecorum. Sorry didn't think to keep a note of the paper for reference.

Semp spores into BRF cake, it just colonised 1/3 of the cake and started knoting in the dry verm, go figure. Usually cube myc just surface, to the dry verm, when when the majority of the cake is colonised, this 2 cakes with sempreviva the myc surface immediately... Got to give a try on a casing of dry verm in the tub
