Question, hope someone can answer this for me. I made a calc error and made way too much grain spawn. Ended up with 20 jars of subtropicalis. All clean, but what to do with all that spawn? I won't be able to grow it all out at the same time. So I wondered if anyone knows how long the spawn remains viable after 100% colonization.

All jars are around 50 colonized.. was a bit too late shaking them.

I'd say weeks if not months at room temperature. you can also put them in the fridge. i have grown out cubensis spawn that was in the fridge for months.

I'd let them consolidate for a week or two after 100% and then store them in the fridge.

Sorry I'm at work and can't spend too much time searching this. I think someone on here said that the longer the grain consolidated, it made pinning faster. I think I remember someone (can't remember who) with a jar almost a year old and it had a myc layer they harvested to see if it was active. So I would imagine if I'm correct with that, they would be fine for a couple months.

I have some 2 year old Semperviva on grain. You should be fine to store some jars at room temp. Maybe even forget a jar or two for mycelium tek?

So this may sound crazy, but subtropicalis does in fact have very active mycelium. I have let jars go 2 months after full colonization and then just shaken and dried the grain.

Then a tea made from the dried grain (not even ground up) yields approximately a 1 gram strong dose equivalent per 10 grams dried grain. (very approximate estimation right now)

1 myco-quart/liter of grain yields approximately 150 grams of dried myceliated grain.

:themoreyouknow:

Also great for making gummies.

Edit: Yoshi beat me. So now it doesn't sound as crazy. Right? Right guys?
In theory, the longer they sit the more potent they get, but I can't confirm or deny this yet.

The mushrooms can sense this, it makes them grow even slower! ๐Ÿ˜€

Subtropicalis makes active mycelium, consider starting a jar/bag and forget about it for awhile. No bulk, casing or FC needed!

Cakes were from back in February, they gave one half assed flush inside but were pretty neglected. Buried June 6th.

Hey Rev,

Am I reading this right? One myco quart of two-month old colonized semp grain has like 15 grams of fruit worth of actives?  So like 15 one-gram trips worth?

I had read it was active but holy cowzilla.

Yoshi, this begs the question; does the active mycelium also contain the trip 'quality' of this mushroom? If so.. that would be a game changer.. :hereyougo: (clean spawn no problem, but I tend to struggle fruiting anything the past 6 months.. )

I'm currently fruiting a jar that was older than a year. Stored at room temp (22-28 at different seasons). I've been keeping them for myc grain tek, but decided to give it a chance to fruit. Left a couple though, will test tea on a guinea pig, haha!

1 year?! doesn't the grain dry out severely? Let me know if it's still viable after such a long consolidation phase, very curious. Would make me more comfortable keeping it around for a few months.

(btw look at this.. 24h post-shaking.. fast recovery due to the warm temperatures currently in the Netherlands)

I haven't tried heavy doses of either. The grain's trip seems similar in how clean and vibrant it is to the mushrooms. IMHO, people should make a jar of myc tek when they make a jar of spawn, it is just too easy.  I'll dig out my 2 year old Semp bag for you, storing a couple months is a breeze!
