What spawning ratio are you guys using for P. subtropicalis? I’ve got a couple quarts of spawn ready to go an I’m thinking of spawning them into standard CV. Is there anything I should know before I go ahead and do it?

Because the myc is so slow I recommend anyone new to subtrops use a 2:1 ratio of sub to spawn, but that is usually due to the fact that many people have a little trouble with proper pasteurization. However, I would guess that you don't have problems with pasteurization.

I've gotten away with 5:1, but it took forever. :strokebeard:

OH JEEZE! :bow2:

It also helps to be chosen by the mushroom gods themselves! SMH

I finally figured out how you get them to look so freakishly good looking.

On the left are my normal high-fae style on the right is my newer low-fae style of the same clone culture. The pinset is a result of different casings on each jar,  choir casing on the left, peat/verm on the right. IMO, cactus soil works so well because, like choir casing, it can be partially colonized.

It seems that I have been giving all of my cultures FAR too much air exchange over the past three years :facepalm3:

I should have guessed by how fast all my mushrooms change cap color so quickly from drying out. I can't remember what that affect is called... Hygro something. You can see it in the mushrooms on the left where the points at the top are a brighter yellow than the rest of the cap, but not on the mushrooms on the right.

Thanks for the help! I spawned it at about 2:1 sub to spawn, perhaps a little higher. Do they like a casing layer?

They do! I would recommend a Choir casing layer no deeper than 1/4 inch. I have had a lot of success with the choir casing being on the dry side after pasteurization, as in, there was little to no water drops shed when squeezed from performing a field capacity test.

I am currently testing a 50:50 Choir:peat/verm but I have no results as of yet to show.

Thanks for the insight @mycorry. I've spawned mine at about 1:5 (spawn:sub). Which is probably why they are taking so long.

Scraped the old casing off and added new 24th of April. No signs to see yet

Alright I’ve had a shoebox colonized for at least a month just sitting to the side.

Finally threw some leftover coir/perlite from repotting a plant on top and then soaked it so we’ll see what happens

All great observations. You're getting good at this!

Thank you Mycorry for alerting me to this thread, and killer contributions to the ever growing knowledge base on how to cultivate P. subtropicalis. Here are a couple trays of mine. I also have a clone pinning currently that did so at 18 days after fruiting.

Wauw, 18 days..

My subtrop trays don't look like they are doing anything at all.

Spawned February 6th
Cased February 15th (probably wat too early)
Scraped dunked and recased April 24th

And looking exactly the same all this time. After how long do I give up? I've read about pinning starting anywhere from 14 days to over 100 days.

Jesus Murphy  It shouldn't be a thing that you waiting that long brings me comfort, but with my first tubs @ like 40 days since spawning,  it unfortunately does... :drphil:

Yeah, they can take a while to get going sometimes . My advice is simply maintain fruiting conditions. The less you mess with them the better.
The good news is once they get going they don't stop. The biological efficiency is amazing. Colonies on mere ounces of substrate can live for almost two years and flush over twenty times. They leave virtually nothing behind by the time they do quit.
The flushes become more sparse as time goes on, but the mid to late tend to produce larger fruits.
This was flush 18 over a year old on one run.
I remember that thing took forever to drop spores. There's that hygrophanous look mycorry referred to.

I waited over a month after spawning, maintain conditions and repeat ohm Shiba kabisha

Edit: they are mature spore droppers, wait until cap turns more brownish

Yes, and don't count on seeing them on the cap, stem or base. The spores are half the size of Cubensis spores. They can really carry and hard to see. Watching the gills closely helps too.

The under side of the one I was holding. If you look really hard you can see a light lavenderish hue. That one dropped a thick print with tendrils where the curves are on the cap. It was so cool looking I kept it for a non-use collector print. Haven't seen the pic of that yet but I'll likely trip over it soon.

1/4 of my subtropicalis boxes/tubs started throwing pins at 13 days!  I was planning on casing and when I went to pull it off the shelf yesterday it was pinning.  :radman:  Just letting it ride sans casing I suppose.  My 2 16qts have been cased and were in fruiting 40+ days.  God I can't wait to try these...

***Edit: Didn't take long to figure out I'd mislabeled the fastest box.  It was actually cubensis var playa uvita.  Way she fuckin goes, boys :wayshegoes:  Other boxes finally pinning though. :bongload:
