going to Portland today
    #27069500 - 12/03/20 08:06 AM (3 years, 1 month ago)

As I make my way thru the lower 48, I've decided to travel by public transportation just for the hell of it. Figure I get to see  more sights then just flying home. I thought about renting or buying a car but one way rentals cost too much and idk of I'm dedicated to spending a few grand on a car than not having anywhere to park it or store it. Plus it take away some of the adventure. Kinda wanna go somewhere snowy. A winter resort or something. Never tried snowboarding. Think that be cool

You're a braver person than I. I'm not getting on public transport unless I absolutely have to. Being cramped up with all those people. Plus...I know I'm not supposed to say it, but I've noticed a significant decrease in mask-wearing among the very poor. I know there are reasons why, but viruses don't care about your reasons.

You think that public transport is for poor people. That's what you just said.

I guess it depends on where you live. In cities without subway systems and such, yeah, it pretty much is basically for people who can't afford a car.

I live in a medium sized city (100k metro area) in the south and I can definitely say that the vast majority of those who ride our public transport system are lower-income.

What you just said is that the vast majority of people are lower income.

Take that for what you will, but the reality is that the vast majority aren't rich.

It actually is going to cost more money than flying.  I mean I paid 30$ for the ticket from Seattle, but leaving Oregon, I'm going to hop on the Amtrak  probably cost a couple hundred or more to city hop between state plus cost of motels food, activies vs flying straight home and only paying a ticket and luggage for around $300

So here's how it works where I live (large city in the south): If you have a car, you drive. If you're too poor to have a car, you take the bus.

I don't care how you want to spin it, but basically, if you take the bus you're sitting amongst people who are dirt poor. That could be for any number of reasons, almost none of which make those people pleasant to be around. Sorry that you have your head in the clouds about it, but there it is.

You live in Atlanta?

Plenty of cities are setup so you don’t need a car, rich or poor. Hell even in Pittsburgh it’s pretty simple to live without a car, and lots do it. Many commute via public transport despite owning a car because it’s faster, more economical, or both.

The attitude that public transport is for poor people is such an elitist American thing. It paints a nice picture of how we see our fellow citizens.

Not Atlanta, but in NC. You're not wrong about the stigma, and it sucks, but that won't go away until the actual clientele changes.

Actually, the bus is pretty ahitty. Not what I thought it would be.  Seems very unsanitary. I feel like I'm getting dirtier riding in this shit. Think I'm fixing to bail and settle for something nicer.  Prehaps I can still rent or buy a car somewhere. Better check Craigslist

I think there's a big difference between cities and suburbs on this issue. It's definitely more difficult to live without a car in the burbs. But the people I know who don't drive aren't usually poor; more like two DUI's.

Yes it is, unless you live in a big city. But even then, rich people don't ride the bus.

Try living in southern california without a car. LOL. What are you going to take the subway to work in LA?

In southern california, yes, all the people on the bus are poor, no doubt about it.

Like I said I know it's different in big cities. Los Angeles not included.

Also traveling on public transportation during the covid pandemic sounds so dumb to me.

Yes they do. They also sell swords at the most active complex as the price of swords seems to fly when said rich persons sling them, like words, or covers. Blankets go up in price.

But only the sword will survive the sword.

...So wouldn't he then be correct in his initial assertion...?

Nothing wrong with public transport btw.

With that said I wouldn't attempt Portland myself atm personally, but it should make for an adventure regardless, OP! Stay safe!

In Toronto and area, people whose jobs require them to wear suits don't tend to ride the bus for the most part, but they do take the subway and regional commuter trains.

Stuck in Oregon. I'm at some cross town called chelmunt. I'm getting on a train to Sacramento tommorow and hopefully I can get a bus from there to Utah, or wyoming.  Might possibly go to Jacksons hole.  Got to climb the summit of black butte.  It was pretty nice. I would like to find another mountain to climb.  Kinda wish I would've gone by Mt Rainier

Lol.  My brother rents a place there and is gone.  But still keeps the rental.  Place makes me laugh now.  Keep Portland alive instead of weird.  Fucked up.  And no just for a room with others.  We are not a commune.

Winter is here.
