hello everyone, I'm going to try and keep this short. I have a good amount of grows under my belt but obviously there is awalys room to improve. Im at the point where i need to increase the amount of substrate i can run at one time.
I built a 55 gallon drum sterilizer but I'm not happy with the amount of time it takes for everything to get up to temperature. So i was thinking why dont people use a dry heating element to heat the drum(like an oven) to bring everything up to temp. Is it the risk of the element putting off too much heat and melting the bags or is it a risk of drying out the substrate? also as of now im limited to 120v 20amp service so i cant upgrade to a 220v heating element.
I'm looking to improve the efficiency of the drum sterilizer method. I have the skills and ability to fabricate, run electrical, etc. just thought i would through these out there to see if i could bounce some ideas off you guys.
looking forward to hearing from everyone!

If dry heat worked people would use their ovens. I won't go into why but forget about it.
I am sure you can run a 240 volt outlet and I would suggest you do it. It takes 6 hours to get to temp with a 120v element and 45 mins for a 5500-watt element and It will cost you less money to run a 5500-watt element if you use a PID...

Dry heat will not sufficiently penetrate your substrate. The center of your bags will thus not be properly sterilized and you will get contams

okay thank you for the link, i cant believe the 220v heats up that fast! i have pretty much the same set up as you but its 110v and takes FOREVER to heat up. Guess i have no choice but to upgrade to 220v, may have to run a sub panel but ill find a way.
i have the same timers as you but im not a big fan of the setup so i am currently programing a arduino to control/automate the process.
