Time to change it up again. 2

I've done a lot of things in my life. I was a cowboy, I was a sound engineer, I was a pro fisherman and most recently I've been a sysadmin. Now I'm bored again. Thinking of maybe doing another degree, maybe as a pharmacist or maybe a computer science degree. Optometry seems like a good idea, but ironically my vision's a bit poor for that. It's a bad time of world to be starting a new business and I'm getting a bit long in the tooth for taking a new trade.
So what do you guys reckon I should do?

Do you really have the money to just up and go to school for Pharmacy, for example?
Seems like a boatload of money. Would you be working while also doing that? I've heard Pharmacy school is some of the hardest shit there is... At least some classes. My good friend was about to finish his degree when he got caught selling cocaine.

I have money enough to study whatever I want, part time, while I work. I like the idea of becoming a pharmacist. I'm super interested in drugs and their applications in general. I don't know how many tatted pharmacists there are though. I don't have face or hand tatts, but pharmacists always wear short sleeves from what I remember.

All excellent suggestions, I will consider your advice.
At the moment the internet is being torn apart by hackers and anyone with any experience and qualifications in network security can write their own pay check. I've got the basic set of IT qualifications, but specialising in security would only take a couple of years. Thing I worry about is becoming bored though. Boredom has always been my enemy.

I think if you're bored at your current job enough to consider a new degree path, you should not be looking towards pharmacy and optometry work.

I hear lab work can be shit boring though, so repetitive. There's labs where I work now and those mofos are so miserable. I guess I could try and mix my other science and tech qualifications together and try and get myself involved with a GPS company or something like that.
I'm the same at every career though, love it for 4 years, get progressively more bored over the next 3 and then dump it for something new. I need something that will hold my attention long term.
I even considered becoming a career criminal and then cashing out after a few years. Go live in the Maldives or some other tax haven. At least I could be rich and bored then.

I feel like being a pharmacist would get boring unless you have a total hard on for chemistry. Because at least in the states you normally work in a CVS and just spend all day making sure that doctors don't kill people by prescribing medications wrong. It would also be strange to have a career in a CVS, where you are making ~100k while everyone else is making minimum wage.
Although, working as a pharmacist in the ED of a level 1 trauma center (highest level of care in U.S) would be pretty cool as you get to mix drugs for doctors and be involved in procedures. However, I would bet those jobs are rare compared to positions in a drug store.

good, not to knock people's dreams but I think being a chef is a bit like being an artist or writer: you should only do it if you literally have to, because the chance of success and of any money is so scant that nearly any other choice is more practically sound lol
that said thank goodness we have people doing those crazy jobs, the world would be a lot more boring without them

I seriously thought I could make a go of being part of the SES here, but I'm not cut out for the trauma exposure. Which is a disappointment. I thought I could be.
In the process of signing up for another degree. Gonna double down on the computer science stuff and push my qualifications. Thinking carefully about which subjects I'm gonna take now.

I've become skeptical "boredom" is something that happens to me. I suspect it is a choice.
After 25 years in plant research and breeding, I'm preparing to work with kids, which has always been my passion. The last few months I've been experimenting with spontaneous community events in parks. I organize various games that maintain physical distancing. Many kids (and parents) do not know how to organize and create fun games. I meet some kids who are 4-7 years old who have never in their life played catch with a ball.

I suggest being weary of any job that will have you sitting at a desk for long periods every day. I've been doing it twelve years now and it's hell on your body. I'm glad I got it out of the way whilst I was young, because it really is bad for you and I can see the toll it takes on those that are much older and have been doing it most of their life.
Just like yourself, I'm at the point where change has to happen. I'm nearly 37 and I've promised myself to be out of this career by 40 since I was about 33; and one of my criteria for getting out was that I would do something that didn't involve sitting all day.
It's very unfortunate, but for most people in our culture, working at a desk is the only way to make really good money. However I am now at the point where money is not enough to continue to do something that is not only hell on my body, but which I hate with every fiber of my being too.
I haven't known what I want to do next, other than several vague ideas/desires, none of which really work when I think about them through to conclusion. Thankfully, it became clear to me a few months ago something that would encapsulate all the various aspects of the different jobs I would like into one, and be a compromise that touches all my required bases: I'm going to open an old school bodybuilders style gym, probably somewhere around the Brisbane area.
It was such a huge relief when that realization came to me; I finally know what to do, now I just have to set about making it happen.
I wish you all the best on your journey man.
-------------------- Let it be seen that you are nothing. And in knowing that you are nothing... there is nothing to lose, there is nothing to gain. What can happen to you? Something can happen to the body, but it will either heal or it won't. What's the big deal? Let life knock you to bits. Let life take you apart. Let life destroy you. It will only destroy what you are not. --Jac O'keeffe

This year (and last year real) kicked my proverbial teeth in, in many ways. I'm looking at it as an opportunity though. Fire to injury, I can't go back to me life long career and I'm no one and injured to start a new career at entry level and still make enough to live the life I would want. Kinda like the kids discussion on the other thread, I refuse to sacrifice my life style for the almighty dollar. So I am using this time to start a business that I have wanted for a very long time. Even while still enjoying my career of choice, I knew this would be better. If it falls, well then I'll be unemployed, injured, and looking for a new path, which is no worse off than I am now so I don't anything other than the effort I used to try to make it work.

I'm hearing you brother, already I've been involved in tech jobs for the best part of a decade.
