Meh. I dunno man. Maybe you're right and nothing will ever satisfy me. The whole "love what you do and do what you love" might just be for people who are far more easily amused than I am... or, I just haven't found the right thing yet.

good, not to knock people's dreams but I think being a chef is a bit like being an artist or writer: you should only do it if you literally have to, because the chance of success and of any money is so scant that nearly any other choice is more practically sound lol
that said thank goodness we have people doing those crazy jobs, the world would be a lot more boring without them

It's not that it's hard to make it as a chef. It is just HELL on your body and mind. I had a blast and it was health issues that made me stop but those health issues are from my career and decades earlier than most would expect them.

Holy fuck! Just noticed your name. Chef life is very much a gypsy life. Lol! Just pack up, move across the country, do your thing for a few years then rinse and repeat.

I lived with a chef years back, we used to party like hell and when I was ready to crash he'd be racking lines and putting on his whites.
Cool guy, mad good surfer, crazy motherfucker.

I seriously thought I could make a go of being part of the SES here, but I'm not cut out for the trauma exposure. Which is a disappointment. I thought I could be.
In the process of signing up for another degree. Gonna double down on the computer science stuff and push my qualifications. Thinking carefully about which subjects I'm gonna take now.

I've become skeptical "boredom" is something that happens to me. I suspect it is a choice.
After 25 years in plant research and breeding, I'm preparing to work with kids, which has always been my passion. The last few months I've been experimenting with spontaneous community events in parks. I organize various games that maintain physical distancing. Many kids (and parents) do not know how to organize and create fun games. I meet some kids who are 4-7 years old who have never in their life played catch with a ball.

Do I double down or what then? What are you implying?
I dunno wtf to do but I know if I'm not learning I take too many drugs. I have financial responsibilities that arent cheap so I can't become a balloon clown. Gotta make the scratch hey.

I suggest being weary of any job that will have you sitting at a desk for long periods every day. I've been doing it twelve years now and it's hell on your body. I'm glad I got it out of the way whilst I was young, because it really is bad for you and I can see the toll it takes on those that are much older and have been doing it most of their life.
Just like yourself, I'm at the point where change has to happen. I'm nearly 37 and I've promised myself to be out of this career by 40 since I was about 33; and one of my criteria for getting out was that I would do something that didn't involve sitting all day.
It's very unfortunate, but for most people in our culture, working at a desk is the only way to make really good money. However I am now at the point where money is not enough to continue to do something that is not only hell on my body, but which I hate with every fiber of my being too.
I haven't known what I want to do next, other than several vague ideas/desires, none of which really work when I think about them through to conclusion. Thankfully, it became clear to me a few months ago something that would encapsulate all the various aspects of the different jobs I would like into one, and be a compromise that touches all my required bases: I'm going to open an old school bodybuilders style gym, probably somewhere around the Brisbane area.
It was such a huge relief when that realization came to me; I finally know what to do, now I just have to set about making it happen.
I wish you all the best on your journey man.
-------------------- Let it be seen that you are nothing. And in knowing that you are nothing... there is nothing to lose, there is nothing to gain. What can happen to you? Something can happen to the body, but it will either heal or it won't. What's the big deal? Let life knock you to bits. Let life take you apart. Let life destroy you. It will only destroy what you are not. --Jac O'keeffe

This year (and last year real) kicked my proverbial teeth in, in many ways. I'm looking at it as an opportunity though. Fire to injury, I can't go back to me life long career and I'm no one and injured to start a new career at entry level and still make enough to live the life I would want. Kinda like the kids discussion on the other thread, I refuse to sacrifice my life style for the almighty dollar. So I am using this time to start a business that I have wanted for a very long time. Even while still enjoying my career of choice, I knew this would be better. If it falls, well then I'll be unemployed, injured, and looking for a new path, which is no worse off than I am now so I don't anything other than the effort I used to try to make it work.

I'm hearing you brother, already I've been involved in tech jobs for the best part of a decade.
I'm glad you've figured out what your like to do.
I'm not 100% convinced doubling down on tech is the right thing to do, but sure as hell it's better than doing nothing.
