Our winter garden 1

I love growing and harvesting medicinal herbs and my fiance likes gardening. I notice she tends to be happier when she can work with her plants, so I suggested an indoor garden. Well, we started it, and it is going well (considering there's feet of snow outside.) I'm growing a few medicinal herbs, while my fiance is growing seasoning herbs.
I got 2 Klip Dagga and 2 motherwort seedlings growing. The Lemonbalm I got back in spring and took it indoors, and we just trimmed the whole thing back to almost nothing, so the growth you see is just like 3 days of regrowing.

Cool man
If you throw a cheap LED, or Fluorescent shop light on them, they will grow even better for you

Thank you! I have like a red/blue light and a small florescent. Do you mean the Klip Dagga or all of them?

Yeah, they could all benefit to some degree from an extra light source

Yes, I took your advice. I have a red/blue light with 3 light sticks so I put one on each of the klip dagga (but not blocking the sun) then I put one light below for the Lemonbalm. (which wasn't getting any sun.) The motherworts mother plant was wild harvested and I found it in a shady area so I'm hoping it keeps growing with just the morning/afternoon sun.

They seem to be doing better with the extra light already. I actually used the blue light overnight last night to maybe help keep them warm. (We live in an old house with shotty insulation.) So far they've survived temps as low as 60 degrees, which worried me since the Klip Dagga is from Africa.

60 is fine for any plant in the world as far as I know. I grew out an 8 foot tall dagga one year, and it got some cold nights in the spring too! It never even phased it either
I'm glad everything is thriving for you my brother

Thanks man! Thanks for the information also! I just couldn't find much online about it that's why I was worried, but I'm glad you have knowledge on the subject. That's awesome you grew Klip Dagga, this is my first time growing it, and it's growing indoors ... So do you use these herbs or just grow them because they're exotic? I'm a little confused on that.

No problem man! I have grown out most everything that you can imagine.
This being said, I have tried most all of the exotic herbs and plants that I've grown one time or another, and over 90% of them never did anything for me including Klip Dagga. Regardless, my psychonaut days have been over for well over decade, and now I only grow my plants for their beauty only.
Occasionally I'll partake in something new, that could help with my anxiety and depression, but the only drugs that I consume recreational are Cannabis, and occasionally some poppy pods in the spring when I grow them out, and that isn't every season.I also have a mushroom trip once every few years or so,and before I found my ovoids this year, I haven't tripped in at least 15 years.
But actual herbs that don't give you a high or buzz I definitely try to consume, when I grow them, this is why I like your thread. I might just find the right combo that could help with my sleep, depression, and anxiety all in one
On a side note, Klip Dagga gets huge, and will never flower indoors, sadly. If you can keep it alive until next spring, you need to put it out in the ground or you'll never get flowers or seeds. Just a heads up

Thanks! I'm planning on growing some more in the spring when it comes. I can help you with a blend, do you know how to make extracts? Some herbs are not noticeable in their pure leaf form. I currently make a blend with motherwort 5x, Chicory resin(CNS depressant), Chamomile and a little bit of 10X Cali Poppy (Like 0.05, or 50mg.)This blend for me is comparable to Clozapam. I make my extracts in Everclear, (I'm not too keen on chemical solviets. )
Even if you tell me "I got this this and this for anxiety" I can help you come up with a blend. I'm pretty skilled in blending and making effective herbal medicine mixes, if I do say so myself.

I know nothing about making extracts or any of that, but yeah, that's awesome that you can do those things!
Maybe I can look into making extracts, and find my own special blend that works for me

Yes! I can help! It's really easy. You just need a mason jar, everclear (or grain alcohol,) coffee filters and strainer (strainer is optional but helpful and can be bought at Dollar Tree)and a pirex dish. You can do warm extractions in a day or cold extractions over the course of a week. But I would highly recommend doing that because you don't need to ingest as much at a time... In example, I can take 1 of these capsules rather than 5 motherwort, a chicory cap or two and a california poppy cap I make it strong enough that taking 1 capsule is like taking all of the above.

Thanks man! and thanks for the advice! It was something I was thinking about doing but it took you saying it to push me over the edge and do it.. But yeah, the Klip Dagga is actually growing in all types of compost; Apples, pears, kiwi, coffee grinds etc. because I read that they like that.

Yes! We have compost piles outside buried that we'll be growing Klip Dagga outside in next year. I just just wanted to grow some through the winter. I'll be happy if I grow some decent sized plants, even if they don't flower. I just want some leaves to smoke on.
I'll probably do an update every week or so, hopefully in a month or two I'll have a decent klip dagga bush... On the subject, do you know how well they tolerate pruning?

Right on man! and yes they will grow nicely indoors. I just think that they grow much too large to be able to flower, although I'm not fairly certain of this.
Do keep us posted though, because I've never seen anybody attempt to grow one indoors before.
Also, I pruned the heck out of mine to make them bush out instead of growing tall and spindly, so prune away once they get enough foliage, and can handle it

The klip dagga you can tell are going to be giant. For seedling, they're huge! But yeah, they've all grown. The Lemonbalm is about ready to trim up again! Me and my fiance also took a cutting from in and placed it in water to sprout roots. I guess that takes about 3 weeks. So we will have a second Lemonbalm plant soon, probably in a smaller pot.

Yeah, it's nasty and bitter! Makes me wanna hibernate in the house! I really hate not being able to harvest herbs too! But, oh well, it's a few months, and at least I got these herbs this year! My fiance is also growing arugula, dill and garlic chives indoors, I haven't really showed them because they're not really medicinal. The cats messed up the garlic chives pretty good though. It's the strangest thing, we take it out for water, and the cats will eat chunks off the damn thing!

That's why I said not *really* medicinal. But that was not what I meant either, I meant like psychoactive (which is the primary theme it seems here. ) I was tired or something yesterday, sorry about that.
But yeah, you're right, they all are medicinal.

Merry Christmas! Got a lot of photos today. I decided to include my fiance's arugula, mint seedlings, parsley and basil seedling and the garlic chives (which is still looking a little rough.) The biggest motherwort got cut too, I couldn't seem to get rid of the powdery mildew so I just cut it down.

These photos were actually taken yesterday morning, but me and my fiance were cleaning the house all day, so it took till today to post.. It actually is snowing today, since last night.. We're quite buried in snow today.
I can't wait to trim a little joint worth of Klip Dagga. Ideally I want 28 days worth. Wanna us Klip Dagga for depression. But yeah, I guess when it gets warm we're gonna try to acclimate them to outside. Hopefully I can do it without killing them. There;s still a couples months yet until the danger of frost has passed.

Yeah, I'm glad my part of the state doesn't get snow. I hate that stuff with a passion!
Have fun with the dagga man!
Dang, we still have four months until the chance of frost past, so depressing.....

Seriously! That was the whole counter objective of the garden- avoiding those winter blues.

That's awesome! I wish we could do that...Yes, I'm late again on the update. I'll take some photos later. My fiance' snipped off the Klip Dagga's baby leaves (because they were falling anyway,) they're getting big, starting to look like little bushes. So, hopefully the next step is shooting up and producing a bunch of leaves. The tallest motherwort kept getting powdery mildew, so I gave up on it and cut it down. I still have 2-3 growing. My Lemonbalm cutting never did propagate, it was looking dead so my fiance and I are going to try with a bigger cutting next time. I was also thinking about propagating through separation once spring rolls around, because the growlight alone is raising up a beautiful green lemonbalm plant. So once I don't have to worry about the other plants, I'm thinking I can do 3 under the growlights and grow my klip dagga and others outside. There's a literary update for you, pictures still to come!

Haha! Seriously sorry bro! Just been busy. The Lemonbalm kinda goes in circles, and the motherwort is still stagnant, so I'm fixin' to pull them up and replace it with something that needs less sun, like perhaps wormwood.. so I'm really just gonna focus on the Klip Dagga, if that's cool.. They have grown exponentially. My Fiance and I are also drawing up blueprints to an outdoor garden- maximizing our use of space and growing multiple medicinal herbs.. Klip Dagga, Motherwort, California Poppy, Red Poppy, wormwood and passion flower is a few I really want to start and have seeds for, but I may grow some more if I can find some that can tolerate part or full shade. Really want some salvia but I think trading here would be my only chance to get it.
Anyway, here's Skippy and Klippy... They're turning into beautiful little bushes now...

Size is kinda hard to tell in all these photos so I measured them. Length wise, the current largest one is Skippy (Grey stubby pot) It had more access to sun because the other one being taller, hit shade which delayed growth. It is 8 1/2 + inches, very close to 9". Whereas Klippy (red/orange pot) is about 7 1/2 + inches, nearly 8".
Also, I realized my wording in my last post may had been confusing. I am not pulling up the lemonbalm, I will transplant that into the ground outside in spring. It is only the Motherwort I'm thinking about pulling out and replacing with wormwood, since it doesn't need much sun.

Well sorry to hear about the others, but those look amazing! Keep em alive until spring then put them in the garden and they will get huge!
I can't wait to see your garden this year brother, and when you can trade, I have a ton of extra seeds I can post on the marketplace to trade with you, if you want
Man, there is a guy right now on the marketplace offering up some nice looking Salvia plants, and by the time you can trade, it will be warm enough for him to ship one to you, I'm sure!
Oh yeah, Skippy and Klippy, love the names

Yeah, the Lemonbalm is still bushy and healthy. I was going to divide it and make a few plants out of it, but I live by the river and get some flooding so we decided come spring we are going to plant it and many other lemonbalm plants (they're sold locally) for erosion control so our basement doesn't flood quite so easily, so the lemonbalm isn't going anywhere, it's likely root-bound as hell.
My nice red/blue light did break though so now I just got a regular fluorescent light on them. They still seem to be alright.
Thanks man and definitely! It just got a little harder because I moved my desk to our room upstairs but we spend most of the day downstairs so, I've just been forgetting to post, other than occasionally thinking "Oh shit, I am so late, I need to show Allium how they're coming along.." lol

For sure, brother! My fiance and I love seeds! The plants I enjoy are the more medicinal ones but she likes edible and decorative ones, flowers, veggies, berries and what have you.

Good question. I can see it and post, does that mean I'm allowed to or am I still too new? Is there a mod I can ask about specifics?

Take a look at these towering beautys! 2 months old now.. Off-season.. They're actually pretty cold tolerant.. It has gotten down to 56 degrees and they've not so much as wilted over it. I think they can survive anything over freezing.

PIC 2- Lemonbalm

Awesome! I'm glad to hear! Yeah the Dagga Germinates easily and holds viability well.. The Lactuca is pretty nice for inflammation.. It actually grows around here, but I noticed it vanished on my way down south, so that's why I put it in there.

I just never got around to getting any. I'll pick some this spring and give it a whirl, and yours will go out in my yard this spring

Yes! Skippy is nearing 2 feet tall, I'm about to give them stakes to support the weight of the (potential) flowers. I hope I can get them accustomed to outside. I only occasionally give them generic wind.

Our last frost says April 16th thru the 27th so I'll have to see how it goes. I really don't know what I'm gonna do with them, not really sure if I could get a potentially 6 foot plant accustomed to outside without killing it. I was thinking of maybe harvasting totally and starting a dozen more, though I hate to do that when they've grown so much and are doing so well...

That was my second thought. I got full sun space on the back deck. Do you think they will flower? When about do they flower? Because something was saying stake them at 2 feet so they can support the flowers.

Yes, and they will flower towards the end of summer. But actually, since yours have a big head start, it could be sooner.
Be sure and take some clones too, so you can keep a mother plant around. It's much easier than waiting for tiny seeds to grow

Cool! Yeah, I was thinking of cloning but when we tried it with Lemonbalm in water we didn't have much luck... Do they clone easily?

So the garden is coming along. The Daggas are well over two feet. I planted some catnip and a sweet mace plant, 2 of which germinated today. (one of each)

Right!? Thankfully my house was built for giants, but I keep considering my ability to lower them lol. The window is not too big unfortunately. Maybe 2 1/2 by 3 feet. I wish they had made it touch the ground.

So... Big updates. They are nearing 3ft and have been going outside the past couple of days. They getting spikes at the top, does that mean they're about to flower? The Lemon Balm is back too, and the division isnt looking bad either. The others are Catnip and Tagetes Lucida

Yes! Awesome! They have mini spike balls actually. I presume they are premature, but they've been going out by day and in by night and they're drinking a lot., and getting huge! Skippy must be 3 1/2 to 4 feet now. I'd say pretty successful indoor grow! They are nearly 4 months old!

You got it bro! That's funny, just yesterday I snapped some pics just for you. So, I tried taking cuttings off Skippy, I'm gonna see how well that works, and I'm hoping to encourage the spike ball to get bigger and flower.

I'll snap some of the Syrian Rue and Catnip later for you. My Tagetes Lucida is also off to a good start, and we planted the Tagetes Patula like a day or two ago, waiting for germination

So, in order these should be Syrian Rue, Tagetes Lucida, St Johns Wort and, new baby Klip Dagga seedlings. I forgot the catnip pics but they are coming along nicely. Look like lemonbalm now

And thanks man! They did start to develop spikes but they really took form after being outside a few days. They are exactly 4 days from being 4 months old, idk how long they take in summer, but through the coldest months of the year, I didn't think that was too bad. I may keep skippy and klippy alive indefinitely. Klippy was sitting in too much water for too long and has gotten occasional powdery mildew but I've been managing to keep it off, and I'm not composting the infected leaves. I don't foresee needing to cut it down, it doesn't seem that bad by any means yet.

No problem man Yeah, I always start up my stuff months early indoors then you have a head start and don't have to wait until late summer/fall to see results
