Advice on buying a truck
#27067675 - 12/02/20 07:44 AM (3 years, 1 month ago) |

I am poor as fuck
I have a car in decent shape but ita getring up there on miles and wear
Ita paid off, plan to keep it
I could use a truck for a few different reasons
My question mainly comes down to as a poor man, with great credit, is it better to save up say 7k and buy something outright off someone selling or to go to the lot and get a loan for something more expensive?
Obviously i feel financially it is better to buy shit out right
But im trying to weigh the cost of repairs over the years against buying something nicer and making payments
Thoughts or suggestions from people who have been down this road and know some of the ins and outs and pros and cons to this?

Sticking with a car you own is ultimately a way better decision, financially, then buying something another vehicle. When you said "as a poor man" you answered your own question. The last thing you need is another payment. Being poor is expensive enough. Trucks are also really bad vehicles for people that don't have money, they are generally more expensive in every way.

Almost always cheaper to keep and repair an old car. Granted you are paying some costs in the form of the time bringing the car to the mechanic or doing the repair yourself.
This is largely dependent upon if you have an honest mechanic also, however.

For reference, I am far from poor as fuck and have never paid a car payment in my life.

Running it into the ground is the way. Then hopefully when you are ready for your next car you will be better off financially and you can get that sweet F150 you always wanted.

It's all about saving the extra money so you can then use that for your next car. You are saving money. Make it worthwhile in the long-term.
Take like $75 a month and put it in a fund you cannot use unless you dying.

If you have a car and need a truck, mount a trailer hitch on the car and buy a used trailer. Most cars can pull a decent sized trailer and it's much cheaper and easier to maintain than a used truck of unknown reliability. Alternatively, it is also cheaper to rent a truck on days that you require a truck than to purchase, maintain and insure a truck.

Ask some buddies if they know anyone who repairs/resells vehicles as a living and/ or hobby. There are a lot of people out there who love to repair and flip salvaged title/scrapped/ or cheaply sold vehicles for a small profit. Or search online locally, you'd be surprised by the number of small garages and individual people that do this depending on your location.
Look for older 90's or early 2000's trucks. I've seen Dodge Ram's/Dakota's go for next to nothing where I'm at and they are solid. There's a reason a ton of them from generations past are still on the road. Look for things marketed as 'work trucks' etc. They might not be the prettiest cosmetically but if you know what to watch out for mechanically, can work on shit yourself a bit/ change your oil, you can get a great deal and working truck for pennies on the dollar.

Renting a vehicle for when you need it is way cheaper in the long run for a second vehicle depending on how you will use it. You can get a 1/2 ton from enterprise for like 900 a month, no tire costs, no oil changes, fucking nothing but insurance. Return it when you are done. No dicking around trying to sell it, no loans, no leases, just drop it off.

I am going to go against the grain and suggest you buy a new* truck, if you have great credit then a loan is practically free money** and if you keep it for a long time like you have done with your car it will be worth it. Used trucks are a bad idea as people only get rid of trucks with problems, good trucks are like dogs and kept till they stop working.
* new as in current or prior 2 model years which qualifies as new for most credit union loans, which is incidently where you should be getting your loan pre approval before you walk into a dealer to make a deal ** opportunity cost of money is a tough concept for many to grasp so I won't explain it more than to say that if you borrow at 1.99% or less and inflation is 3% you are actually saving money vs. buying outright. Opportunity cost theory says you make even more by taking that cash and putting it into the market which typically outpaces both inflation and interest by a fair amount.
My personal pic is the honda ridgeline for reliability and it can replace the car, but the big two are usually fighting to sell their production line and offer 0% plus if you hit it right

The thing about trucks is, you can rent them by the day if you actually need what a truck is for.
Trucks are for business owners who need to lug lots of gear,
or for people who want to pull trailers and shit.

Well i work in construction and i want to have a good vehicle for towing for the future
I can get by without it though soni guess ill do that
Definitely more a want than a need
But eventually it will be a need
And it would be useful now. Possibly even enough ti be considered more valuable at work

I'd find an employer that is gonna provide you with a company truck, they sound like some cawk smokers. I am sure they're making a lot of money off your labor and it is the least they could do.
