Tests? No its not that.
Its more like people who take God lightly get easy tasks. Middle men who work for God get medium difficulty tasks.
And those closests to God get the heaviest of all

People who arrive first aren't rewarded more handsomely than people who arrive last, but there's no reason for the environment to be any more difficult, if you look for opportunities to be lead out of temptation.

What do you mean by "opportunities to lead you out of temptation"? is the environment gonna give you passes sometimes and not others? aren't we really supposed to be working with an integral and balanced maturity to work our way's through each environment and action (as to be functualy/successful in our workings), and not so much as depend on particular opportunities for special (one-time-only) passes?
Or am I being too philosophical at approaching this?

yes that can be true at times, sometimes the challenges get harder the more we develop, not easier. but on the plus side there are perks too

The Lord's prayer goes "And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil", but if you pass up the opportunities to be lead out of temptation when they arise, it might seem like you're being put through a difficult situation when you're really not.

there are many paths and many schools
within the Bible, if that is one's chosen path, there is the story of Job who certainly had a difficult life
as much as it goes against our wishes, I do feel we are tested and molded by experience, and that this can become more challenging as we progress, much like a black belt degree is harder to earn than a yellow belt.
but everyone has their own path and we can only understand what we ourselves have experienced.

On one hand I think being closer to god is more difficult because it might command you away from earthly desire but on the other hand being closer to god is a certain anchor in self justification. For example you have the zealous priest who has renounced earthly passion (difficult) but leads a wholesome existence (easy)

God is both the All-Merciful and seemingly void of any mercy.
The world seems so boundlessly cruel, if you lack the perspective of an Eternal Life, where inbetween lives are fully restored and replenished beyond measure.
What you are forced to invest in suffering, starving child with worms in its eyes, shall be richly compensated in the hereafter.
Earthly suffering and generosity are hard currency on the Other Side.
the further the pendulum swings to one side it will have to swing to the other side to finally equalize into the Neutrality of being One with Everything.
If you surround yourself with gratuitous luxuries such as a golden toilet, in a world where people are forced to feed water dirtier than what you flush to their children because they have nothing, if you surround yourself with gratuitous luxury but don't practice charity, do not use part of that wealth to help out those in need, including nature itself, if you have every ability to do Good but omit doing so or even choose to do wicked acts, pointing the finger at the pharma cartel greatly for-profit increasing the price of insulin in the USA as an example of wickedness woe! woe! woe! to you in the hereafter, because instead of the wealth the poor and wretches gathered, you will have a great debt awaiting you.
The universe is exacting in its honest weights and measures, no matter how cold the ice or hot the steam - it shall return exactly to room temperature, and so will it be with your good works and evil works.
One could say that Jesus brought the Heart of God and Islam brought the hand of God.
Let this hand grip you and even Christians will recognize that the truth is in there, in the words of the God of Ibrahim/Abraham and Nuh/Noah.
There is a balance, an order in the Universe, one direction, entropy, that it all flows to, like a clockwork of cosmological constants and their governing laws of interaction, even staunch scientific atheists will agree.

God can do it all without us.
The obstacles in your life, such as my infected leg wound that now has me almost screaming out in pain at this moment, because the diluted bleach is eating its way into it to destroy the resistant microorganisms that the antibiotic cannot catch, consider the obstancles, your hardships and difficulties, consider them TESTS to TEACH YOU.
God gives us hard tasks that in the end will break either our mind or just our bodies, that in the end will break us in two - not to punish us or to torture us out of some sadistic inclination, but for our betterment.
If you heat the red earth enough, Iron will flow out, If you reheat that iron and beat it over and over with a hammer you beat out the impurities and hardened steel remains.
Such is the intent of our suffering, I tell you as I squirm in agony as the desinfectant gnaws at my inflamed wound, squirm so I dont scream out to worry my neighbors.
God is with me in this, and he gave me the wound, the prediabetic state that makes it not heal, the nauseating antibiotic and the gnawing desinfectant, all that torture me greatly. And I know it is He and only He that delivers the stabs that make me startle and brace, it is he, figuratively, jabbing His finger in the wound he made.
If you know this and THEN love God, you are not a fair weather friend of His but serious about your faith.
God is teaching us, is raising us into a squence leading up to full Godhood. And then you must know pain as well as love, then you must have felt fear and doubt as well as faith and hope.
We are drops of that Oceam, and we are ALL THAT.
We are child forms of the Almighty, grpowing up and reuniting with all aspects until we have become the Totality of Everything.
Thats worth some discomfort.
The body is a Temple but Temples are meant to be used up until the very foundations.
Life's an obstacle course and these obstacles teach us and make us more Whole.
The closer you are to God, the less he will spare you the rod, but the greater your reward in the hereafter.
OUCH!
Amen!
And don't worry, I already bought the pain free povidone-iodine to follow up on the initial diluted bleach desinfection with modified Dakin's solution, invented during world war 1 to irrigate war wounds contaminated with the mud of Flanders and residual mustard gas. I'm gonna be OK.
