I'm following this.  So far I've got six 8" x 3' Maple logs harvested today in Wisconsin.  Currently looking for spawn plugs, thinking I should wait until closer to spring.

Can anyone confirm if they can be inoculated in winter zone 4?  Is it necessary to inoculate within two months of felling the tree?

The growing parameters,as well as several growing methods for lion's mane have been discussed plenty on this forum..I'd suggest using the search feature rather than waiting for people to do the research for you!

If you have more specific/in depth questions I'm sure people here would be more than happy to help, but we're not gonna do it all for you!

Freezing shouldn't hurt, but it will greatly increase colonization time allowing possible contams.

I think early spring is a more suitable time to inoculate.

Yes it is important to inoculate in about 1 month. Waiting to long can allow other organisms to grow instead.

Thanks for the response.  Been reading conflicting information.  Some say to season the log for 1-3 months so it has 40% moisture content, specifically stating not to use green wood.  Others say if inoculated within 10 days of felling then soaking isn't necessary.

I'm on the fence, worried the plugs may die in a deep freeze, but wanting to get started ASAP.  Realistically it would be a three month wait to get started in the spring and I doubt there is much chance for contamination over winter.  We've gone weeks where the temps don't get above zero Fahrenheit.

I called a guy in NC selling spawn plugs this morning and left a message.

I'm guessing three months in the fridge is too long of a wait for spawn plugs.  Maybe I'll buy the cheese wax and seal the ends for now.

Another bit of info that's conflicting is the wax temp, MorningChores says not exceed 212F, while AshevilleFungi says to heat wax to 250F.

Plugs will be fine if sealed and refrigerated 3 months, from my own experience.

I've decided to get to get the plugs, inoculate, and store the logs in my basement.
