Do you need pins before going from spawn jars to substrate? * 1
    #27064382 - 11/30/20 11:14 AM (3 years, 1 month ago)

Asking for a friend and that friend is me.  I've included some pics of the spawn jars to aid a bit further.  Oh and I've had these in the spawn jars since before Halloween. They are golden teacher jars. Any and all insight would be greatly appreciated.  http://http://

No you don't need pins to spawn but I would wait for your jars to be completely colonized before birthing them.
Birthing them before complete colonization will contaminate the uncolonized brf.
You will also need to plan for consolidation time, after the jar is completed in colonized on the outside there may still be uncolonized spawn in the middle of it so give it time to colonize the middle or you may be waiting extra time after birthing them for fruits.

Thanks for the insight I greatly appreciate it.   These have been an extremely long labor of love but hopefully they will be worth it. I just wish I new why they were taking so long.

It's a simple explanation really.
You see its tough for the mushroom to colonize the densely packed environment of a BRF cake.
Grain spawn colonizes faster because it has "motility" which means you can shake them up and spread your spawn.
BRF cakes you cannot, you're simply stuck waiting for it to finish until finally after a couple months its done.

Oh wow. Yes that is rather obvious and I feel like a dolt for not see it.  Thanks for clicking the light on.  It's all coming together.   It might also explain why my Lions mane is taking five thousand years to colonize.  Oh well first time growers lessons to learn.

BRF is a great method to start out with, you gain the skill of sterilization which is essential for mushcult.
BRF jars if they're not sterilized proper will always contaminate usually.
Your next steps after this is to gather spores, learn how to use Agar, and use those Spores you gathered from this BRF grow to spawn another generation.
You should honestly go from Agar to Grain next, Rye grain is best for beginning to learn.
Then you'll see just how fast cubensis can be, I've gotten rye jars to colonize in two weeks flat using agar.

Half-pint jars take about a month to colonize (the recommend jar type for PF Tek) and these look like quart* jars, which are equivalent to 4 half-pint jars. Because of the density of the PF mixture that mushhead mentioned, and the large size of the jar, it creates for some very long colonization times.

*correction, these are actually pint jars.

I wonder if the first three are pints and the last is a quart? In the third picture you can read the measurements on the jar, definitely a pint.

Edit: The last jar is a pint as well; for reference

Yeah they are all pints.  Thanks for the feedback.  These guys are fruiting now . Props to this community and the youtuber Philly Golden teacher for making my first grow possible.

Nice flush!
Now that you have some base knowledge you ought to read up a bunch of grain teks, agar teks, and others on here.
There's a lot on that youtubers channel that isn't covered.
