Lime bath (cold pasteurization) - NEW TRIALS 2

Hi guys
I made a few weeks ago a new batch experimenting again the cold pasteurization tek using lime to grow Pleurotus ostreatus As reminder, my aim is to produce gourmet mushrooms with the lower carbon footprint. I tried this time 2 different substrates :
- Pine sawdust (that I get for free from a carpenter)
and
- Oak sawdust (that I get for free too from a cooper)
I made 4kg bags of which 65% limed water P. ostreatus strain : A300 (from Belgium) No supplementation
Despite the fact that pinus excretes antifungal compounds, tannins and others... I wanted to give it a try because I read in a topic here on shroomery a guy who grows with great success Oyster mushrooms using pine pellets (supplemented with alfalfa) whereas most of the grower use HWFP.
Here is a photo of the bags : pine substrate on the left / oak substrate on the right
Day 1

Day 10

After 3 weeks of incubation, I put the bags outside in the shade. The temperature here in south-western France are around 2°C and 15°C now. I spray water 2-3 times a day.
About 1 week later, the 1st pinset emerged at the same time on both substrates. 1 more week later, the P. ostreatus show well, even if the growth is quite slow (due probably to low temperatures and poor nutriments). Here are some photos from yesterday :

As it is a quite successful experiment, for the next batch, I will simply add 20% weat bran in my dry substrate to compare the growth and the yield.

Yes so far, which is surprising.
I'm pretty sure that when I will add nutriments like weat bran, it will grow very well.
I just have to watch out the incubation and fruiting temperatures, as the substrate is not sterilized, but only cold pasteurized.

1% of lime only, that I mix with the cold water. Then I put it in the dry substrate and mix it again.

Here are more pics from yesterday. I'm gonna harvest them this afternoon and will let you know the yield.

Once again, for non supplemented substrate, I'm glad to see a decent quantity of mushrooms growing.

Lookin nice! Can I ask why you have the entire substrate exposed vs top fruiting or cutting slits?

I usually only cut the top of the bag, but as it was an experimental batch, I wanted to see how it worked leaving the whole substrate exposed to air. Also, as I leave the bags outside, the weather being very humid and cold, the substrates don't dry too much. I spray them 2-3 times a day.

Gotcha! Wss just curious if there was a specific reason or not.
Did you tally up the yield on them yet?

Great results! I love the lime bath method. it is even better when you're hydrating sawdust exactly and have no left over lime water like you would with soaking straw.
Thanks for sharing and please keep going!

I harvested the 1st flush. Around 300g/bag (no significant difference between both substrates). Such small crops were expected as the substrates were not supplemented.
I will give you the exact final yield after the 2nd and maybe 3rd flush.
In the past I've had really good yield using the lime bath tek on supplemented substrate (around 90-100% BE)
Here are some pics of these oyster mushrooms grown on both pine sawdust and oak sawdust. They were delicious !

So you make a 65% lime solution in bucket of water and wood. Then mix 1% lime into the field capacity substrate? Do I have this right?

I think he makes a 1% lime solution and then hydrates his substrate to field capacity (65%) with the lime solution.
Those oysters look beautiful odawg. very cool that youre getting good results on pine.

Exact this is the way I proceed.

nice work dude
seems like it would be way easier than heat pasteurization.

I already tried lime batch tek with several mushroom strains (Oysters, Lions Mane, Shiitake). It works very well with all kind of oyster mushrooms, because the mycelium is very aggressive and grows very fast. However I failed the only time I tried with LM and most of shiitake (only 1 bag out of 8 fruited). But the substrate was too "rich" (20% wheat bran) and was contaminated quickly by green mold. I should try again to grow LM with a different substrate.

Hey, guys, can we get an update, I'm biting my nails here lol, how is it going? I'm really interested, i have some batches of grains spawn rn, i want to experiment as well, with different substatea and see how it goes
