Spyware and vpn
    #27063768 - 11/29/20 10:08 PM (3 years, 1 month ago)

How easy is it for someone to install spyware on a MacBook, assuming they had access to your computer?  How about if they had your password?

Also, if it did have spyware, would updating the software get rid of it?

Very easy if they had physical access and the drive was not encrypted.    Also very easy if you had an encrypted drive and they had your password and physical access.

It's likely someone who had your password but no physical access would have no way to use it.

If you think someone may have compromised your computer, updating the software won't help.  A partial solution would be antivirus software like Malwarebytes, but it can't find everything.

The best thing to do is change all passwords, back up all your data, reinstall the OS, install all security patches, copy your data back and reinstall all apps.

In the future be sure to enable full drive encryption with Filevault, and set the screen to lock after a short period of inactivity.  Lock your screen when you leave your keyboard if there is any chance someone untrusted could sit down at your computer.

Keep your system up to date (both the OS and all programs that interact with anything from the internet) and don't run anything that people send to you via email or messenger.
