Filter Fan units (ffu) are all the rage right now. They're cheap, effective and hassle free, looking into getting one myself. If you live in the land of freedom and MacDonald's, you can get a decent one online from Mayers.

Or if you're a tiny bit smart you could ebay your own and skip having someone tack their fee onto one.
But if you have no success using a SAB let's not pretend like a flowhood is going to magically bestow you with prerequisite skill

This...I see a lot of people have constant failures in a SAB and think that a FH will remedy it all....so untrue. Bad technique will just carry over whether in a SAB or using a hood.

Don't buy a FFU online. Your going to pay just as much for shipping, because you have to get it delivered on a pallet. Search craigslist. Buy locally if you can.

I've built 2 hoods from purchased filters. 1st is a 2x2 and my recent one is a 2x3.
I got the 2x3 filter from fungidotcom and it cost $400 shipped, did not include anything but the filter, and had to be constructed myself. All in all it cost around $600 including my time.
An 2x4 ffu from myers is $759 with free shipping. A foot longer, all included, ready to plug in unit for 150 bucks more.
I've been thinking of buying one just because
A flowhood wont solve your aseptic technique issues, sadly. What it will do is give you the room, and confidence to work unobstructed by holes in a box, sweating profusely, clanky jars in a smaller space, etc.
You still need to work on your technique in front of a hood but I find the absence of the obstacles listed above makes it much easier.
You can learn aseptic technique the hard way or the easy way. I myself learned the hard way but if you want to learn the easy way and can afford to then go for it.
Awaiting flack...

My 1st hood, the 2x2, i got 2 filters for 150 from ebay. One of the filters was damaged though. It too cost me less than 400 but the point is that you still have to build it and what not. Not everyone wants to do that. A plug and play, double the size for less than double the price is a deal in my opinion
1st and 2nd hood respectively

aliexpress has a shitload of FFU listings, pretty sure myers is buying from one of the companies on there
The minimums on most listings I saw are just 1 unit and prices are like $150 - $200 for a 2' x 4'
(no idea how much shipping is though but I bet for 1 unit it is still reasonable)
Fuck building a hood with FFUs available. My hood cost over $700 all said and done (2' x 2') And at least a couple hours of labour. Plus moving it sucks ass, it's like 150 - 200lbs.
An FFU 2' x 4' is like 70 pounds or less

I too use the ebay approach and snagged a hell of a deal...got 2 2x2 Camfil Megalam panel FFUs for $200 plus $100 shipping. I've been using them for 3 years now and they haven't failed me yet.
I like the fact that I can go single for small work like agar and inoculating grains or I can double them for inoculating substrate bags.
Freedom of movement is so nice especially when you got a lot of bags to do.

Thanks man! Plexiglass siding and a stainless steel work surface. Still need to build a blower box and add a couple outlets etc. but I love it. Still wouldnt mind a 2x4 though
