ID request amanita phalloides * 1
    #27062129 - 11/28/20 08:07 PM (3 years, 1 month ago)

Found growing under a live oak in Berkeley last week when it was just a button. Went back today and found it kicked over, so I grabbed it and took a couple of shots. I *think* this is Amanita phalloides, based on the gold/green sheen, ring, and volva. Can anyone confirm?

One unique thing about mushrooms in the genus Amanita is that the buttons do not need to be connected to any underground mycelium or mycorrhiza to continue developing. You can take that button home and given adequate conditions it will continue to open up.

Looks like an Amanita, but I don't think it is Phalloides. I'm basing this off the color of the cap (which for Phalloides is usually olive green rather than white). Color is not a very reliable ID feature for any mushroom so take this with a grain of salt.

There are several white-capped Amanitas in the section Phalloideae. Most famously, Amanita ocreata (the destroying angel).

I don't know if your mushroom is in this section or not, but a good place to start identifying this mushroom would be to compare it to a few of the species in this section.
