First timer....forgot for 2d....came black to tons of mushrooms but black everywhere!! Can spores be that much? Still safe?
    #27062027 - 11/28/20 06:35 PM (3 years, 2 months ago)

So, it's my absolute first time ever cultivating. My cakes had already produced some fun results

...but I got busy over Thanksgiving and didn't check them for 2 days. Opened up the box and audibly gasped. First at the number and size of what had grown in just two days....but mostly at the color!! I initially thought, that's it, it's all garbage...but then I got to reading and realized maybe...just maybe this is all spores... It just seems pretty drastic so I wanted to check with the experts. It's not worth it to me to get sick...but, if it's just spores/harmless it seems like a heck of a lot of mushrooms to throw out.

This is what I discovered:

Here are some additional pics (I apologize about the orientation):

As you can see in the pic, some of the black can be rubbed off...but not very easily...revealing a healthy, normal color underneath (only on some, the black is adhered better on others). It looks slimy but I think (emphasis on think) that's just the moisture from the condensation/humidity because they've dried out and don't have that appearance anymore.

Then, there's the question, if it's spores...and therefore carry on as usual (right?)? What to do with the cakes and vermiculite....because that's been way affected as well:

I'm looking forward to hearing some experienced thoughts! Like I said at first I thought, that's it, straight to the trash but after searching around on the forum I saw a somewhat similar pic that gave me a sliver of hope that there's some saving of it, if it's safe of course. I would have just gone off other posts but couldn't find anything quite to this extent to be sure.  I am blown away at how rapid that growth was!!! and have learned a very good lesson about spores if that's the culprit!!

So,
1. Just spores? Dry as usual and consume away? Possible potency/taste issue but otherwise good to go? Or hell no, throw that shit away and sterilize?

The cakes and vermeculite had me scared too...but I'm leaning towards spores just the way the pattern is (i.e. not under where the cake is etc...)....The colors are kinda a gradient of black and the bead of water in that one picture of a cake I think is just from condensation....once again no experience though...

2. If good to go, how to save the cakes? Shall I just dunk as usual. Anything else, or will the spores have rendered them useless. I think it's safe to say that was the first flush and from what I've read it's recommended to dunk after each flush?

3. What about the vermiculite? Mixing it all in seems a little too simple..can they get re-aerosolized /should I get new verm? It's also even on the tubing for my air supply hose....will spores still be harmful if remnants are left on that? Specific way to clean?

....unrelated to the concern above...since knowing the answer to that is my primary speed bump right now and I'm super thankful to have any answers to the above I can get!!!.....but fingers crossed it's viable and then if you have spare time/interest I'd be interested regarding the following questions. Don't mean to be a question hog so no worries of course!

1. Is there a good reference to know when to re-dunk a cake? i.e. is a flush after you get one big growth and even if you have pins you should dunk again? Or wait until you see nothing? I feel like I got a few of those big growths like the first pic from the cakes that I had picked and then kept monitoring .....and then obviously holy crap a giant forest!

2. Is it pretty common for mushrooms to grow on top of each other/branch out from one giant stalk like you see in my first pic? It's a little different from pictures of flushes I've researched.

3. Along those lines, if it possible for cakes to be too crowded? Should I make it a point to spread them out a certain distance?

4. I'm feeling like as I learn I'm going to cut instead of twist/pull. The mycelium in the cakes seemed really tightly woven, like a root bed (once again, yes I'm a newb) and it was difficult to twist and pull, even gently without getting some of the cake/mycelium too (just like pulling a dandelion)....especially for those big guys where everything was branching off of that.

Thanks everyone, loving this forum for it's plethora of knowledge!

Looks like spores to me. Unchecked with no air exchange for a couple of days has left me finding similar results in my earlier grow days. Peace.

And I’d just wipe the spores off the fruits if you find it unappealing. I’d dunk em and fruit them again.

1 #1. Yes. Yes. Potency no, taste yes.
2 #1. Harvest and dunk as usual.
3 #1. Spores aren't harmful.

1 #2. Dunk after each flush. Yes.
2 #2. Yes, it's a cluster. They're pretty neat.
3 #2. Probably when there are so many cakes that blocks airflow in the SGFC, but yours aren't too crowded IMO. Look how much they're producing...

Spore won't hurt you.
They just affect taste, smell and visual appeal, they also seem to interfere with the substrates pinning where they land. Not sure why or if that's only something I experience. I also seem to get some pretty bad gut rot from mushrooms with spore laden gill/spore coated fruits. That's purely subjective though.

My preference is to not have spores on my fruits so I decapitate any mushroom that's fully matured so the rest can catch up without a sporesplosion. It's not necessary though.

People just generally seem to enjoy mushrooms that you can eat like 'tater chips because of no foul shitty spore taste. The people I know anyway.

That’s a really nice cake grow.

I’d rinse those things off and they’ll be good as new. It is shocking just how many spores drop the first time you see it.
