Crystal formations, what are they?
    #27061528 - 11/28/20 11:57 AM (3 years, 1 month ago)

Hello I’ve recently bought a microscope.  Looking at some mycelium on a slide and I’ve found an abundance of crystal formations. Can anybody tell me what they are please?

Probably calcium oxalate

Hi HC, I have seen this before. Bodhisatta's suggestion that it is calcium oxalate is a good one - from my understanding they tend to be more common in wood rot fungi. Alternatively, they could be undissolved crystals from the mounting solution (e.g. KOH) that you may be using. R_D

Excellent thank you.  I case anyone is interested The mycelium is Psilocybe Cyanescens, no mounting solution because it’s live culture in water.
👍🏿

Hi HC, as a woodlover, and with only water as a mount you are probably looking at CaC2O4 as Bodhi suggested. Hope you enjoy the microscopy...the nubby headed (mucronate) pleurocystidia of P. cyanescens are pretty cool! R_D

What's the significance of calcium oxalate for mushrooms / mycelium?

Do those particles around the crystals maybe indicate some (enzymatic) interaction?

Woodlovers use it to help break down cellulose rich substrates

ahh never heard of breaking down cellulose, but it is likely used as defence in plants from mostly insects, bad for herbavores too but more long term.
