Stereoclave questions
    #27058228 - 11/26/20 07:58 AM (3 years, 2 months ago)

I am thinking about getting a stereoclave, as my stove will not support larger pressure cookers or huge pots. I have replaced the terminals and elements several times on my stove. They can not withstand the long and high temperature cooks with my pressure cookers. Therefore, I am not able to use my AA cooker. I am using a Presto which only holds half as much as the AA.
First, I am wondering if the stereoclave can be used to simmer the grain before actual pressure cook. (either in the insert that it comes with, or straight in the stereoclave cooker itself) Ive cooked up to 18 pounds of grain in the presto after simmering it in large stock pot.
This is a very large amount of material/grain to work with unless one is used to and set up for it. The stereoclave, if purchased would require 36 pounds of grain to be filled to capacity. (holds 6x 6# bags)
How do you cook that much at once? Will the stereoclave do it? I know some of you have independent hot plates, but these seem to be limited as well.
Also, do I need to be concerned about how much power the stereoclave uses?  Thanks and please let me now what you think, if you have experience or own a stereoclave.    -floydster

The steroclave cannot be used to cook grains directly, there's a direct heating element at the bottom.

Given your situation, you could get another large pot to cook another 18lbs of grains along with your presto. If you already have a AA, just get a cadco csr-3t and use that to cook more grains.

stereoclaves use quite a bit of power, but most household outlets will be able to handle it.

Thanks for the reply. Yes I realize there is a direct heating element at the bottom. Are you saying that the grains would burn from too much direct heat, or that it just should not/cant be done? Thanks for the cadco recommendation also; I was thinking about going that route as well.  Yes i do already have a large AA.
What are the limits of the cadco in terms of size of pot, weight of pot? thanks for all replies.

It probably can be done, but wouldn't recommend it. Sounds like a PITA.

People have used 941 on the same Cadco mentioned as well, filling 54lb of grains in there and PCing with success.

I agree, does sound like a pain. I like the idea of the cadco with my AA 930. The stereoclave is quite expensive and also on backorder due to high demand. The cadco recommends a pot no larger than 1 inch more than the circumferance of the element. (8 inch element) so I wasnt sure about the massive AA with its size and weight once loaded. Its good to hear people are having success with it using their 941 AA.
The cadco seems to use only slightly less power than the stereoclave.
Cadco is 1500 Watts and the Stereoclave 1650.

Why not buy a propane burner? My stove can’t handle large stuff either so I use my propane burner quite a bit, for PC cycles and beer brewing.

That is a good alternative option. Ive thought about the propane burner but what do you do in the winter?  My understanding is it needs to be used outdoors.

If you had a garage with a couple windows open I wouldn't sweat it.

If you're in a hurry, might have to find out slow

You get there quicker just a step at a time

This is what I do and it works fine. Or just hang out underneath an overhang of some sort.

The difficult part is finding where to dry out your grains when it’s pouring rain outside... I recently lost a whole 40 lb batch of prepped grains because I trusted the weather report...

I always park in the driveway when I prep grains for that exact reason lol
