Outdoor question b+
    #2706053 - 05/20/04 03:59 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

My friend has an outdoor patch of B+. He doesn't have any digital pictures. It is pinning and the shrooms are coming up. That are a dark color. He was expecting them to be lighter in color. Does anyone know what B+ should look like in an outdoor patch? If it got cold (but not freezing) for one night after the initial pinning, would that make a difference in the color. What are these things supposed to look like? Thanks in advance.

i bet they should look like a shroom, if it got freezing at night, then warmed up in the day, the freezing may have killed it, then the heat rotted it maybe?

after a cold night, they might blue a bit (even on the caps, which makes them appear "darker".)

They started out dark around the edges with a little light brown part that looked to be pushing up in the middle of the pin. He thought that looked about right. Now they are all a dark blue, but still growing. He has had a lot of rain lately, and one night it got down around 40.

It has rained just about everyday around there lately, at least that is what my friend told me. The ground is very moist. It rained a great deal after the pins broke through. Slugs have been a problem. He used some iron phosphate to deter them. He hasn't seen any since. Iron phosphate is non toxic and occurs naturally in the soil. I don't know if it could affect the color of the schrooms. He tried to keep it around the patch but not in the patch. Being a newbie, he isn't very familar with bruising. The whole schroom is a deep and dark blue, not just parts of it. They are still very small and just a few days old.

I guess his biggest concern is that it could be something other than the B+ that he is trying to cultivate. They don't look like anything that he anticipated when he viewed the pictures on this site.

Hopefully it is just a combination of the cold weather and the rain. More pins are starting to poke through. He should be rejoicing at his first success in cultivation, but instead he is very concerned.

Let me see if I can help. Blue is bad, but the may recover. You say it was a little brown dot pushing up, yes that sounds right. Also, mushrooms outdoors are much more vivid in color when young (darker). Keep an eye on them.
Edit: I have seen them grow at a friends house in near frost temperatures at night. I told him he was crazy for trying an outdoor patch so late in the year since it was already getting cold at night. He did anyway and it fruited up till frost.

Outdoor mushrooms grow a lot different than indoor. An outdoor patch of say Creepers, will usually look completely different than an indoor grow. They usually grow shorter and thicker than what they would indoor because they have to deal with the elements. They also usually carry more weight per shroom though. Good luck with that man, and keep us posted.

I will give you a full report, and thanks to everyone for the advice. They keep growing and pinning, they just look a little different than I expected.
