Salvia Divinorum Grow Log
    #27059848 - 11/27/20 09:28 AM (3 years, 2 months ago)

Salvia Grow Log
Got rooted cutting from a nonshroomery website.
Placed in regular potting soil (miracle gro indoor potting mix)
Put plastic bag over top for a humidity dome.
Cut holes in bag slowly over a week or so before finally removing.
Bottom Water when soil is dry.

Things I've learned:
Salvia is a drama queen. It is very reactive to slight changes in environment.

Salvia will shed its leaves as it adapts to a new environment. My plant went through about three sets of leaves before more prolific growth occurred.

Leaves / posture of plant will adjust a lot based on needs. I notice that she starts to droop when thirsty.

Shaded indirect light works best ime.

Its normal for Cuttings to die down to the next node.

Don't mutilate your plants in the heat of summer without appropriate means of temp control

11/24/2020.
Planted rooted cutting into a pot with indoor potting mix.

Punctured 9-12 holes into a plastic bag.
Misted the inside of the bag and placed it over the pot.

Stem recently started browning.
Maybe bc the pot is too big/overwatering?
Maybe bc I added a stake for support?

Found this guy growing out the bottom of the pot.
Guessing that it's Leucocoprinus straminellus, the flower pot fungus or at least Leucocoprinus sp.

4 cuttings and 1 leaf cutting
Each one has at least 3 nodes.
The leaf cutting has a tiny piece of the stem.
Kept the original stem.

What's left...

July 05, 2021
Already lost lots of leaves.
I've been keeping the leaves tho.

July 11, 2021
The leaf cutting didn't make it. Hoping that at least the top two make it. The bottom two lost their leaves but gonna leave it and see.

Here's the mother. Keeping the soil moist to see if it'll shoot or start growing leaves again but I am doubtful.

Not much of an update, but here they are today

Some good observations.

It'll die back to the node below as there's not reason to keep the stem alive if there's a stub left.

Any opinion as to why the stem is browning? It's not soft or mushy. Happened in about 1 day.

It happens in some of my plants sometimes too.
Ime, its not really a big deal if it doesnt grow that much or get soft and so.
Just Keep an eye on it.

I dont really know why or how this can happens, but as I said before, it just happens to me once in a while, idk.

Good luck with it, mate~ Overall it looks great

Thanks. Some of the branches have a small purple coloring too. I will try to take a photo.

But the stem quickly turned purple. And it's like a 50/50 split

When it dies....

But even then, I've read some stories where people just kept a "dead" stem around and it rooted after a few months

I'm gonna make some cuttings in the next week or 2 and see how she does

No it's only been 2 days.
I imagine at least a week.
I didn't use rooting hormone but I will change the water each day.

And tbh the plants not in the best spot right now. It's like 90+f in that room rn

Praying to the salvia gods.

Stay tuned

The leaf cutting didn't make it. Hoping that at least the top two make it. The bottom two lost their leaves but gonna leave it and see.

Here's the mother. Keeping the soil moist to see if it'll shoot or start growing leaves again but I am doubtful.

When you take a cutting, try to avoid removing more than 10% of the total leaf mass of the mother plant. Remove all leaf mater along the stem that will be submerged underwater; it's just going to rot. You need to change the water once a day for about a week; distilled water works fine. I recommend using two jars; one that has the cutting in it and a new jar of water that you switch the cutting to quickly.

Use a brand new, sharp razor and try to cleanly slice the stem with one consistent motion so the vascular tissue isn't mashed. Take the cutting just under a node because that's where S. divinorum readily grows roots, although with rooting hormone they will grow out of anywhere along the stem. Here's after about a week of rooting in water and what it should look like when roots start growing out the side.

There are other things you can do to optimize the rooting process, but these are the most basic instructions that get the job done.

Thanks so much, Andjew.

I got antsy and totally mutilated her; my living situation is not so great atm so I figured I could try and get cuttings or let her die.

I definitely learned my lesson tho.

I've been changing the water everyday. It's been 12 days since the cuttings and no roots.

I've read crazy stories about salvia plants coming to life after some time, so I'm going to keep it around and see what happens

Thankfully I'll be in a much better living situation in about a month or so and will be able to get another plant

Over the years, I've seen this happen more than a few times. I had a cutting die back to the soil level, and I put the pot outside because I thought it was dead. It survived the entire winter on its own outside and came back in the spring (hardiness zone 8).

If they've lasted this long then there's hope.

By now the ones that would've died would have done so already. Losing leaves is totally normal usually too.

Just follow the advice giving about changing the water and you should see root nubs within a week(fingers crossed).

Then I saw this little flower pot fungus pin poking through

Cuttings rotted and I had to move so I tossed em.

I kept the mother stem and will pray to the salvia gods that she comes alive.
