What would you do in my situation? Tub won't pin.
    #27059570 - 11/27/20 02:15 AM (3 years, 2 months ago)

So I put my grain to substrate 26 days ago now.

Put into fruiting  conditions 18 days ago now and...  nothing.

I've been told lots of different things from it's contaminated to that I should add a casing layer.

It smells good, gets fanned with the lid twice a day, and has moisture on the surface as you can see.

My gut feel is that it has been too wet. I recently stopped misting as much and even soaked up some of the surface moisture with paper towel.

My options are:

a) Wait patiently
b) Ditch it
c) Try the wax paper/ bubble wrap trick
d) Set up a fan next to it to increase FAE.

Thanks everyone.

Looks okay to my inexperienced eye. Option A is my pick. Sometimes the best thing you can do is set the lid on, walk away and forget about it for a week or two. If it's healthy, it will get there. Best flushes I ever had were tubs I literally forgot about and never misted or fanned! If you're going to use a fan (though I don't believe that's necessary) make sure it's pointed away from the tun so it doesn't dry it out too much.

That’s good to know! I was just a little worried because a few people said it’s contaminated and that’s why it’s not doing anything.

I’ll probably wait a few more days before I try anything new.

Any other opinions? Has anyone seen a tub like this before that completely covers the surface in strong white mycelium but won’t pin?

It has a sufficient amount of moisture on the surface, so just waiting is the best option.
It could be stalled by contamination, but the other options wont help.

Not even the bubble wrap/ wax paper method? Is that a myth?

I've had tubs with thick mycelium like that I was pretty sure would produce at least something, and they never pinned. I think occasionally you can get a culture going that just won't produce any mushrooms. Possibly some kind of contamination lurking in there too.

Wait it out and see. In my case it was like 2 months I waited and finally ditched the shoeboxes. I think it was LGT

What temperatures do you have ?

Normally cubes are very determined to make fruits, at least a few. Even from bacterial tubs usually a few fruits come up in my (limited) experience. But it is not unheard of that a tub wont make a single fruit.

It looks very dense on the top. Are there signs of side-pins ? I have made the experience of getting side-pins if the top grew all dense like here (which was OK, side pin mushrooms still make magic).

For now I would wait, unless you need the space for something new to try.

Do you have a photo of the agar plate you used to inoculate your grains ?

I don’t artificially change the temperature in my room unless it’s meant to be extra hot or cold. It’s spring/summer here so about  25C/77F during the day dropping to 20C/68F at night. Have done successful grows in these temps before. But this is my first time trying an unmodified tub.

I did a syringe to agar initially. Got some mycelium and some contamination. Isolated to another dish and it looked clean. It was very tomentose the whole time though which might be the issue.

I’ve got photos. I’ll chuck them up when I can get to my computer. I’m on my phone at the moment.

These are the photos. A contaminated first agar plate because the spores were straight from a syringe. A clean looking second plate. And also what it looked like colonising the rye grain.

So frustrating to go through all this, get to the final stage and nothing happns...

Another question: I have a spare jar of this same culture. Should i ditch it seeing as it won't fruit or could it be specific to this tub? I was going to do some grain to grain transfers and then get another tub going.

Your temperatures should be fine.

From my limited experience the agar looks ok enough. I got fruits from worse looking agar. I never really cared much about tomentose. Being a multispore culture should actually help with getting pins because there are many genetics.

The jar also looks OK enough to me.

Maybe more experiences TCs can help more.

Don't get frustrated. Sometimes such things happen. I once had a grow that worked perfectly fine, I head great fruits and all, plenty of it. And they were total bunk. Even eating 10g of them could be felt at all, totally inactive.

These days I am working only with pans and exotics and being new to them I have one failure after the other, but it gets better with every try. It just sometimes happens in this hobby.

If all else fails and you write it is spring summer where you live now, is there a possibility to go outdoor ? Some of my best fruits happened from buried old substrates or contaminated stuff in the compost. If you have that possibility and the temperatures are right in your area this would be the last thing I'd try.

But for now I would just wait some more I guess.

definitely looks a bit over-tended, my first set of shoeboxes did the same thing. Stopped misting/fanning and dialed in my substrate recipe and never had the issue again. They did eventually produce some fruit but very small ones, barely a 1-2cm tall, if that.

Neglect tek is surprisingly effective, especially with unmodded tubs. If you prepare you substrate well, you really shouldn't need to mist at all unless you live somewhere super dry. I've noticed sometimes it'll take a day or two after full colonization for water droplets to form naturally, RESIST THE URGE TO MIST. If surface conditions don't develop and you see your myc look a little thirsty, give it a mist and maybe add a little more water to the sub next time.

Fanning is unnecessary. I can't tell from the picture how good the seal on that tote is but maybe try flipping the lid upside down to let more FAE. As long as the room's air isn't completely stagnant it should be fine without a fan.

A lot of it is just dialing in your set up. Get some new projects going in the mean time and check on it after a few days of ignoring it.

It's probably fine. Even if it's not fine, it'll eventually be fine. So it's fine.

That’s what I suspected.

I think I actually have a pretty good substrate method dialled in but I stupidly overdid the misting and fanning because I wanted to feel like I was doing something. I’ve had great results before with a modified tub but because this was my first unmodified, I wanted to give it a bit more care.

I read somewhere that you should mist and fan monotubs and then elsewhere that you shouldn’t and I think this proves I shouldn’t with my method and location.

I have the latch under the lid on one side so could have better FAE but I think it’s enough. I’ve just propped it up a bit more with polyfil and going to leave it for a few days.

Thanks mate!

Looks good man. Plenty of mousture on the surface. Give it a good fanning with the lid for 30 seconds or so once or 2x a day. Mist only as needed if the wTer droplets dissappear from the surface. Do it lightly only when needed just so it glistens like the morning dew than evaporates off slowly triggering pinning.

Tub looks kinda badish, I would go with the bubble wrap method. It does work and can bring some success. Looks like to much tending and possibly bacterial.

I put a new casing layer over it on someone’s advice (he definitely knew what he was talking about).

I’ve accepted that I probably won’t get any fruits but if I do it’s a bonus. No reason to throw it out when it doesn’t have trich.

Will definitely update if I see fruits so if someone stumbles across this thread through a search they’ll know what to do.
