Calculating spawn/substrate depth

Guys,
I don’t trust substrate calculators. Please tell me if my calculations for determining the quantity of spawn and substrate needed to create a 4” substrate depth are correct. I’m using a Sterilite 32 quart 6-hole tub.
At 4”, the actual interior dimensions are 15” L x 12” W.
For a 4” substrate, I calculated tub L x tub W x substrate depth. 15 x 12 x 4 = 720 cubic inches.
There are 67.2 cubic inches in a dry quart.
720 divided by 67.2 = 10.7 quarts of spawn plus substrate. Call it 11.
6 quart jars filled 2/3s full of rye spawn produce 4 quarts of spawn.
I’ll mix 4 quarts of spawn with 7 quarts of substrate to create a total substrate depth of 4”.
Does that add up?
Thanks,
Tom

Bod,
I'm honored by your response. Thank you!
I've heard some people say that you have to adjust that formula a bit because the hydrated rye is going to have a larger volume than dry rye. It will occupy more space, thus raising the depth of the substrate.
Without any adjustment to the calculation, it seems that the only potentially undesirable outcome is that I'll have leftover spawn. And that's not really a problem because I can simply dump it into one of my new, adorable 6 quart shoeboxes.
Would you agree?
Much thanks,
Tom

The math can be simplified to easy ratios, really. 1 quart of spawn per 3 quarts of bulk substrate is typical. Thats 1:3. Some stretch their spawn to 1:4. Some use more spawn to speed up the colonizaton process even more, and use a 1:2 ratio.
Eyeballing it is good enough. Id say start with 1:3.. Give or take. 😉

Blink,
Yes, I'm familiar with the ratios. I've used 1:3 in the past with good results. I'm growing in the tiny home office in which my wife and I are currently forced to work. And she doesn't even trip! She is quite tolerant, but she still bitches occasionally, mainly due to the 75 degree temperature that I attempt to maintain. So time is of the essence. To accelerate colonization, I want to try something closer to 1:2, as indicated by the numbers I mentioned.
Thanks,
Tom

No problem. The further I get in this hobby the less precise I am. And so far, it has not made a single difference. I eyeball everything now except my agar mix ingredients.
