Shitakke Grow report

Fellow brothers and sisters at the shroomery. I've decided to make use of some Shitakke wood plugs i bought on accident, thinking it was LC.
I made due with what i had however.
I put larger holes in the center of a few jars, big enough for wood plugs.
I made a substrate of verm, rye flour, pine chips, and distilled water. PC'd the jars for an hour and a half.
Let cool, then poke the wood plugs through the holes i made in the jars. I then cover with micropore tape.
So far I'm getting little wisps of mycelium. Its been about 3-4 days.
Can't wait to eat some mushies! Its not my first grow, however I'm new to gourmet wood lover species.
I'll keep everyone posted. advice is encouraged.

The thing about dowels is they're not all that likely to be entirely clean, so I'd be a little worried going into a flour substrate. Also pine chips are not really ideal.
But hopefully it goes well for you. Curious how you are planning to birth the block out of the jar?

Im going to treat it as a traditional brf cake in a SGFC, because i don't have access to the proper supplies to do this the ideal way. I'm in a small bedroom and don't have access to funds.

I now have three jars that are showing healthy signs of mycelium. I will post pics later today. Hopefully by then, there will be more to show. Quite a bit happened over the course of one night

Latest update. Having some visible colonization. It's looking promising so far. Fingers crossed that i doesn't get contaminated.

The reddish part at the top, is from the wooden dowel inserted into the jar.

Most mushrooms can grow off cardboard/newspaper with a bit of coffee. (Just not the slicky paper) You could probably find some success boiling it up and putting it in the jars when it's still hot, let it cool down then inoculate it. (Make sure jars are clean tho) You could use glass jars with aluminum foil caps if you just left em be in a box somewhere. Clean spawn is really all you need, the rest you can improvise shit. If it don't work, fuggit, you learned what won't work. But you can probably think back and figure out why it didn't too. Just keeping getting things you can use year after year when you get a bit of money towards your hobby, I was in your spot once too, but being broke didn't stop me trying shit anyways.
I had reishi growing off cardboard/coffee in pint jars last year.

Healthy as can be i think. These wood plugs were a good investment. Aside from taking forever to colonize, everything looks healthy. No sign of contamination at all.
