Are people still pasteurizing coir?

Maybe this topic has been debated endlessly but I couldn't find much info in a quick search.
Does anyone not pasteurize coir/ verm as a bulk substrate?
I suspect it isn't necessary but haven't tested it yet myself. I'll probably put a test tub together soon.

I think just about everyone does, but maybe it isn't necessary. I know there are people that cold pasteurize as well.
I'd imagine without pasteurization you risk a much greater chance of contamination, and I've also heard that the heat from the pasteurization process begins to break down the coir and make it more bioavailable for the mycelium.

Long story short no. Even the bucket teknisnt really pasteurization. Seems to have been proven coir works better after hitting it with hot water and cooking it a bit but pasteurization is a bit overkill.
There was even a tek about a guy putting bricks in a trough with hot water and hitting it with a drill and it's fine. Plenty of threads of people doing coir without doing anything and it's fine.
Side question, how would cold pasteurization even work, sounds like an oxymoron.

It's not pasteurizing and it's personally dependent. Some do, some don't. I do because I ascribe to the "myc seems to like cooked coir more" philosophy as put out by some TCs.
It's not any extra work to put a pot on a stove for awhile. I don't know what kind of funky shit is living in my coolers so why not.

I'm pretty sure people soak it in hydrated lime. Not a true pasteurization, just a name.

I'm familiar with it with straw since your just doing a quick lime bath but I have never in my life seen anyone do it with coir.

No, nobody uses lime in coir.

Pasteurization is really only necessary for manure/straw/etc. Coir works fine with just hot water added and some verm. I like to mix up the substrate so if you do decide to use any combination, it would be a good idea to throw the coir in the mix with the manure/straw/whatever else is being used to pasteurize from 140F-165F for 60-90mins. Easy peasy.

Ok, it doesn't sound like there's a consensus on the subject. I use the bucket tek for coir/ verm pasteurization. It's really easy but it would be nice to eliminate this step since it takes hours for the substrate to cool down. I'll try no-pasteurization and will report back in this thread.
It does look like it's possible to sterilize using pressure alone, "pascalization." That would be at pressures of 50,000 psi. Coir brick compression is at about 60 psi so I can't imagine this process eliminates any contams. My guess is that coir is contam resistant because it's more alkaline and not pre-digested by bacteria like manure, making it harder for molds to gain a foothold.
It's probably best practice to pasteurize, but if the spawn is clean maybe not necessary. I'll see how it goes.

Un-bucket Tek
I use standard bucket tek if I plan ahead, but if I'm feeling more spontaneous ("oh shit, time to spawn these jars") I just use warm tap water. Both work great.

I use hot tap water on all my coir now
Have not run into any problems over many months and many tubs

What do you mean ? Could you please elaborate sir ? I take boiling water that I dump into a bucket with the coco coir, then I put lid on, I come back 5-10 mins later and stir really well, and I put back on the lid and come back and hour later for one last stir before I fill tubs.

I use boiled water in my bucket tek (link in sig) but not in attempt to pasteurize anything. I just like the consistency of the coir when cooked and feel like it works better. Also my technique utilizes the steam for hydrating so its kind of necessary. I'm also just used to it and we all have habits.

Same man. If you have healthy mycelium and add at least 3 quarts to your bulk substrate, it won’t be strong enough to contam the myceliumZzx in my experience

As I understand it, coir doesn't need to be "pasturised" like straw or horse-poo does. It just needs hydrated. I don't grow on the kind of scale where a whole brick of coir is needed, I just chip chunks off it and add warm tap water, and let it sit maybe half an hour before spawning. Maybe "cooked" coir performs better, IDK, but I'm usually too impatient to wait a whole day to process it like that and wait on it cooling down.
