Experiences With Schizophrenia?

I'm just genuinely curious: Have any members been diagnosed with a schizophrenic condition? And if so would they mind sharing their experiences?

I had a schizophrenia diagnosis from a psychiatrist. I had to be on a antipsychotic for a little while but another psych said I wasn't. I am sure it was the wrong diagnosis but kind of terrifying to be told that.

Are you wondering if there's a link with psychedelic use?

No. I just honestly want to hear people with schizophrenia describe their experiences.

I was originally diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder bipolar type which is schizophrenia and bipolar but that dx was changed to bipolar 1 with psychosis during a hospitalization by a PA who actually knew what she was doing... What exactly do you want to know? There are hundreds of videos describing the schizophrenic experience on YouTube. Just saying

Nothing in particular. Just whatever you're comfortable sharing. If you aren't comfortable sharing anything then that's fine too.
I've never been diagnosed with any schizophrenic type disorder and there's no indication that I suffer from one. It's just not a really straightforward group of people to really understand, that doesn't change the fact that they're out there (I have a neighbor who suffers from a pretty bad case of chronic paranoid schizophrenia, which is really hard to watch to be honest) and I guess I just feel like hearing from people who seem to kind of fall through the cracks, so to speak.

What does your neighbor do that makes it hard to watch?

He's just generally terrified of everything. For a while he was cutting down the hedges around his house in lacrosse gear because he was convinced that animals were going to attack him, there was a period of time were he'd leave his car running, blaring the local weather advisory radio (not sure what the reason was for that one) and a few weeks ago he took a bunch of limes off of his neighbor's tree and was tossing them down the street for a while. He also totaled his car a while back, though he seems to be more or less uninjured right now. As far as I know he's also had some drug problems and he's definitely a familiar character to the local police. It kind of seems like he's really trying hard to just be functional and he's managing to hang on. Personally I'm kind of assuming that a lot of the dramatic, acting-out type of symptoms that I notice are a result of some kind of extreme stress.
I know that I can't really help the dude, but I still feel bad for him.

Celiac disease causes me to go skitzo when I eat gluten, eat past 6pm, & get no sleep.
I'm happy I can manage it. I don't wanna be in skitzo mode 24/7!

I think he might work at the local Domino's. I know that his grandfather owned the house that he's living in now though, so I doubt that rent is an issue for him.

I'm sorry it took do long to respond man... I was busy... Schizophrenia is the most complicated mental illness that can effect the individual... Sensory disturbance is what seems to intrigue the "normals" Hearing, seeing, feeling and smelling things that aren't there... Many who develop schizophrenia develop what psychiatry calls "insight" The individual may hear voices but is aware they're not real... The trap is when they're unaware... Many with the disorder who have insight can function quite normally in society. Delusions, which your neighbor suffers from, are a whole new ball of wax... Delusions do not respond to any form of medical treatment at all unfortunately... Those close to the patient can carefully challenge a false belief but be prepared for an aggressive reaction because to them, at that point, you might be considered "in on it"... Just letting you know... It can come in waves though... In other words there could be periods where the poor fellow isn't caught up in his head. At that point you'd be amazed at how lucid they've become... Befriend him... Start off by asking if you could help him cut his hedges... You can become his ally. A good friend they can rely on... Just be prepared when he comes to you for help with his craziness... At that point, like I've already said, you might be able to help him work through that period... 99% or more of those who suffer will never become physical. They may become agitated but they won't become physical... My daughter grew up with my illness and went on to become a dual diagnosis psychiatric nurse... We talk about this all of the time... I hope that helped in some way... If you have any more questions, shoot...
