Shelf life of shrooms

Hey guys thanks for taking a second to check this out. I know this has been answered before but I couldn't find this specific situation on here. So I grew some chitwans and some penis envys a few months back and put them on the dehydrator until "cracker" dry, put them in a ziplock bag and they've been up in a cupboard ever since. I just checked on them a few minutes ago and they're slightly squishy, like maybe they've absorbed some moisture from the air. They have been in the ziplock bag this whole time but I guess they're not perfectly airtight. Question is, do you think they're still good?? If I put them back on the dehydrator will they be ok? Any chance that they've lost some potency? I'm really trying to trip for new years and I just had a bin go green on me so these old mushies are my last hope. Thank you for any advice on this matter. Peace

pics would help, but, yes, theyre fine. has the odor inside the bag changed? any pungent smells or does it just smell like mushies?

sure, but probably not necessary. i never use a dehydrator and always slowly air dry mine over a few days. im sure ill catch some flak for my "old-school" method but idc because my homegrown mushies are always super potent

yes, undoubtably, but probably barely noticeable since they are not really that old.
my last batch i had the same suspision. i dried them, placed in a jar.. then a few days later suspected they werent totally dry because some stems felt "soft".. so to remedy this i took my whole harvest (about 5 ounces) and laid them in a aluminum baking tin (roast pan) and placed them on top of my refrigerator for 24 hours. then threw them back in the jar. this was back in July. i ate 4 grams last week and blasted off into another realm. good luck mate and hope your new years goes well!

If you want to keep those as cracker dry as possible I would suggest placing those in a container with a packet of silica gel to keep the moisture level down.

That's crazy you mention that, I actually just got some of those in a few days ago for this exact reason. I've BEEN wanting to get these for a while, cause normally when I get mushies in I get ALOT and want to keep them fresh, but I just didn't know what they were called. Then I just googled "do not eat pack in beef jerky" and it took me right to them.

Don't keep them in plastic or anything else that "breathes"

I suggest a glass jar with an airtight lid, packed to the brim as to not have extra room for air, and food grade desiccants.
I've had a batch stored this way stay good for over a year (and still going good).
Without air or moisture to ruin them, they should be good for years (assuming properly dried and stored).

Ball jars with good lids they'll last into the 8 year mark, and counting...

Unless you vacuum seal your mushrooms always always put a desiccant packet inside of the bag to absorb moisture. Smell the mushrooms and see if they smell like mold. You are going to want to dehydrate them again and then the bag you put them in make sure you put a desiccant packet inside of it.
As for preservation, if you grind up your mushrooms and then put it into honey they will last forever. Straight up honey. I would probably use raw honey if I were you.

8 years?? Well that's good man, I have plenty of Ball Mason jars around, and their original lids are virtually unused because I buy plastic lids for mycology work. So next batch I get in I'm definitely going to have to pack a jar up and put a desiccant packet in there for some long term storage. Also, for shorter term storage and because I usually get more than what will fit in a normal sized Mason jar, I usually just use gallon sized ziplock bags, but they are never in there for more than a few weeks. I'm going to start putting desiccant packets in those too tho. Also @OutsideOfMyMind I put them back on the dehydrator for a couple hours and they're as dry as ever. Back in the bag with a desiccant packet. Thanks for the honey idea too I'm definitely going to have to try that

Can't remember where I heard it from but in biblical times, ancient times, that's how they preserved the manna mushroom, ground in honey. Stir it so you get an equal dose with each spoonful. I would probably do about 1.5 grams per tablespoon of honey and then use the tiny main jars to separate them. I've never done it myself but have heard of lots of people doing it. Now that I have a bit more to save for the new year I might consider doing it.
I've been taking my shrooms with a spoonful of honey lately anyway with a couple drops of essential lemon oil for the stomach.

i had an idea recently involving shroom tea.. i was wondering if you could freeze the magic liquid and store it indefinitely in the freezer?
any thoughts?

I've had some for 3 years that are still good and potent. I did put 2 or 3 desiccant packets in each baggie.

Technically yes, but you would need a freezer that has no defrost cycle. Repeated enough, that freeze-thaw cycle causes "freezer burn" on frozen items and causes ice cubes to evaporate out of the trays over time.

Yes this works. I've done it a few times. Made a 7g tea and froze it. Then a few weeks later I thawed it out and it was still a 10/10.

Rice is a a great cheap harmless desiccant.
Properly dried into glass jars with rice....5 years and counting.

How much rice do you need per ounce in the jar?

Good point, honey almost never goes bad. Apparently the 3000 year old honey found in some Egyptian tomb was still edible
