PE brf cakes not fruiting?
    #27054772 - 11/23/20 11:21 PM (3 years, 2 months ago)

Hellllo!! I have these PE strain cakes going and it took about 3ish weeks for them to colonize (waited until I could see pins forming in the jars) and I put them in my sgfc. Its now been about 3 weeks and I redunked one of them but only one formed and the rest havent pinned. They are p bruised but mycelium keeps forming on them, I have it at 23 degrees and I fan them 3 times a day and mist 3 times a day. Does this strain just take long to grow or? Idk what I could do better

Cakes not pinning for 3 weeks inside the FC almost always means the environment is extremely undesirable for fruiting subs. Your cakes look dried out and too soaked at the same time, what I call the 'typical noob/SGFC looking cakes'. The surface conditions of your cakes at this point is beyond horrific and most likely will not fruit at all and you will not be able to correct it at this point just by timing when and how much you mist.

Ime the only chance you have at this point of salvaging some fruits is to try to repair the surface conditions by 'rebooting' the cakes, it's actually pretty simple il break it down for ya.

First of you want to rehydrate your cakes real quick, especially if they feel really light then dunk them for ~12h but if they still seem to hold a bunch of water then 5-6h is enough. After the dunk you want to coat the cakes fully in a verm layer again, preferably coat the cakes in somewhat moist verm or coir, it should appear inviting for the myc to recolonize i.e it shouldn't be too dry and it shouldn't be overly wet. After you coat you cakes then place them inside a container that you completely shut closed with no FAE for a couple of days. You'll notice brand new myc regenerating all over the cakes surface, let the new myc 'grab' a hold of the newly applied 'outer layer' and when the cakes have turned 50-70% white again then take them out, mist them correctly one time until you've created desirable surface conditions and then place the cakes back in the SGFC or your fruiting setup of choice.

Without rebooting the cakes I really don't see how you will be able to create pinning conditions on those substrates. Hope that helps. Gl

iirc you need more cakes in a SGFC that size. Maybe try making a smaller one?

Yeah.. that sgfc is way too big for that amount of cakes.. your cakes are drying out and especially with PE.  PE takes longer to fruit so you need another way besides redunking them to rehydrate later in the fruiting process.  I suggest a thicker double ended casing.  Something like this:

It’s simple and doesn’t require a ton of maintenance.. it’s just a ziplock with needle holes all over the bag.. every 2-3 inches.  The thick verm casing on the top and bottom can be watered later during fruiting to rehydrate (over the course of a couple days—just soak the verm layers) this won’t disturb pins like redunking will and is required for good PE flushes on cakes.  Bottom watering also works.

If you’re going to use a large FC like that, you need to pack it.  Here’s 24 cakes in a bin your size (2 bins, 48 cakes total—they’re double stacked).. these are PE

Here’s a medium sized bin with appropriate cake amount.. also PE

.

I also do nonpe cakes with the verm layers.. just gotta be careful not to over water them

.

omg whoops... ill definitely be trying the ziploc method out. Do you have to mist the inside of the bag regularly? And can I place them on top of tinfoil?

I dont have to mist the bags at all.  Foil would work.
