Beginner Mistake - How big of a problem is this? * 1
    #27054159 - 11/23/20 03:27 PM (3 years, 2 months ago)

Hello world,
Huge noob to the world of mycology and mushrooms. Without wasting too much of your time - I understand I need to read up on a lot before attempt#2. However, given how fast this all has been happening I find I am ill prepared and in the middle of a fruit so I'm hoping a pro can set me straight on what to do from here.

My attempt:

Spore syringes came from Mushroom Prints and I chose Z Strain and Blue Meanies. Ultimate Kit ordered from MidwestGrowKits. inoculated using the fake-flow-hood-oven-method. I birthed all of them (less one that I suspected may be contaminated) and dunked immediately with purified water in ziplocks for over 24 hours.

Next the idiocy begins:

1) I put both strains of cakes in the same fruiting chamber. I think this resulted in multiple strains growing on multiple cakes and only a few of these have grown to adult sizes. I don't know if it is that or if I simply mixed the jars up but there's certainly no uniformity to the cakes like I expected from how they were placed.

2) I had one cake that was clearly the top performer. This morning I found it had dumped black spores everywhere and caps turned inside out. The weird thing is that the caps are all black now too. This is a little spooky looking, but in the contam thread I did read airflow could have put the spores on top.

So, opinions, criticisms, etc. would be much appreciated! Am I going to be able to harvest anything from these? Are the caps that turned dark going to be safe to eat? How do you folks confirm the spores you received and grew were what you ordered and safe to consume? What would you do in my shoes where I'm at now.

Thank you so much in advanced <3

Lol, chill out, because you have done a great job so far and now have experience that will inform your timing in the future.

I doubt your varieties would have mixed from placing them in the same fruiting chamber, because they should have been fully colonized prior to removing from their jars.

You might want to get into bulk grows more now. The uniform appearance you are looking for is achievable by cloning with the use of agar media. You seem to be able to write a coverent post, so you would only do yourself a disservice by not cloning your favorite fruits to agar and starting a bulk grow with grains (oats) and spawning to pasteurized coco coir.

Those look pretty good to me...definitely not bad at all for a beginner, and probably better than a majority of people do using grow kits.

You can get all those supplies for much cheaper yourself for your next attempt, if you are gonna keep growing.

The spores are no problem. It's very common for them to end up on the top of the caps like that. If it bothers you, you can wash them off under the sink or use a paper towel to wipe them off...but you could just dehydrate them as is.

Mixing different cakes in the same fruiting chamber isn't going to cause different varieties to grow on different cakes and it really won't negatively affect things in any meaningful way.

Looks like a pretty nice harvest for a first timer. consider just buying them supplies yourself for the next go :gd_icon:

congrats :super:

Thank you guys for the kind words. I found this resource today after spazzing about this current project - so I am going to dive in. So much information.

Can anyone recommend what to look for as far as when to harvest these strains? I should be pulling them before they blow their spores like the guys on the right, yes?

Thanks,

Optimally harvest them right before the veils tear unless you are keeping them for prints.

The vast majority of those are ready for harvest.
