I wouldn't buy the cheapest board off Amazon. Probably like $120 for a build I would want to use. Induction coils are awesome I just cant see using one for anything but making knives

You could be positive just once... I see no downside to this invention and butane is very expensive if u use your torch a lot.

Don't worry, I'm sure he'll soon go say the same thing to all those TCs who use bacti-cinerators.
Personally, I find fucking with a flame to be a pain in the ass. Don't like to leave it on the whole time, but also hate turning it on and off constantly. I've been tempted to just use a tea candle or something to flame off some iso, and skip getting things red hot. That's been sterile protocol in a couple of places I've worked. Though real labs tend not to reuse stuff as much as I do...
How difficult would it be to put this on a short toggled timer? So you hit the button and get say 15 secs of power, then it shuts off? Otherwise I'd forget to turn it off and burn something out.

$9 USD on ebay, +$1 shipping out of Chinaland. Won't know the longevity of em but it's not like this isn't something you could build yourself either. This unit is only 120w
Lots ranging from $9 - $34 depending on wattage. OP what is the wattage of your unit?
I mean if the units are inexpensive and don't blow up within a year there's nothing stopping a guy from 3D printing a housing to put some small PC fans on and repurposing a foot pedal for control.
I generally don't go in for DIY fire hazards or slapdash garbage magnetic stirrers but why not.

This defeats the original purpose, but I imagine you could make a free standing design? Seems like it would be nice to have instead of a torch, especially once the foot switch is worked out.

I got a 1000w capable zvs and i run it at 240w so it stays cool and has a lot of headroom so it wont die from long use. i do not recommend the cheapest units but you can get what i got for about 45$

I like the fact that it keeps the scalpel inside the SAB at all times....pretty cool actually

On using this inside the sab like mentioned before. Wouldn't that be a bad thing?
Wouldn't the heat generated by the scalpel create some turbulence with the air from temperature differences or would the effect be so small it don't matter and is probably better than arm out-arm in with a torch?

I wouldn't place it inside the sab because it does radiate a small amount of heat, this is why its right outside the sab. the way its set up it will make no more airflow than putting ur scalpel in the sab after torching it.

buy a power supply, buy the little $5 induction heater
boom bang done, pry solder the coil to the board. Need a power cord for the power supply and a couple wires to attach the heater to the supply

Not that easy, the cheaper(120w) induction coils actually don't get the blade hot enough IMO. I've tweaked it a bit and I've actually gone up to 500 watts. I want to make sure I've done enough testing with it to do a write up with specs that are good. There are a lot of power supply's and a lot of ZVS circuits for sale and they aren't all created equal.
