Hey guys, I have been successfully growing mushrooms in a 65l monotub, growing on Coco coir with wheat grain spawn, no liner. I seal up the holes on the tub until the substrate is colonized then remove the tape and fill them with polyfill. My question is: How do I take my tubs from sporadic fruiting across the substrate to those full canopies of golden caps I keep seeing? Please point me in the right direction fam.

Enough spawn, good spawn, genetics, conditions.

Some people use a layer of tin foil on top of sub until fully colonized. I dont do that I just rely on good genetics and agar isolations. I am posting pics tomorrow of my pinning tubs.

Judging by your replies I think I will try adding more spawn and doing more cloning/isolation work. I am growing Z strain cloned from a nice sized potent mushroom. Aside from the ropey singular strands of mycelium, what traits should I look for in a colony to fruit out.

I’ve had awesome clones that were rhizo, fluffy tomentose, and really thin looking on agar. Your agar recipe I think has a lot to do with how the myc looks on plates so I don’t discriminate by looks, it’s all about testing them out and seeing how they grow. Shoe boxes are great for that. If there’s a section on a plate that’s growing out faster than the rest or just looks interesting somehow I will go for that.
I’ve had a lot of MS grows do really well too. It’s mostly about surface conditions unless you get unlucky with genetics. Try going straight into fruiting conditions after spawning, make sure you have a top layer, and I like to up the FAE once I have a forest of pins. Canopies hold their own humidity in a way so once they start crowding together you can rock the air and it seems to coax up a fuller flush.
Also make sure to build your tubs carefully and level.

I wish I could figure out how to load a pic for better reference. I'm pretty sure I've honed in on some good genetics, it's super rhizomorphic on grain and coir, it has a voracious appetite and the fruit is potent. In all honesty after watching YouTube videos all morning I think my fae is TOO HIGH! My last substrate must have had 10,000 hyphal knots, WAY more than I have ever had, but the yield was sub par. Some mushrooms also had caps split open on the edges and in the centre. The room I grow in has a RH of 30% @ 21-22°C with a small circulation fan pointed at the tubs. I think I will reposition the fan for indirect circulation, stuff my holes tighter and up the ratio of spawn to substrate.
