Peat Moss + Vermiculite Casing - Pasturize or Sterilize?
    #2705396 - 05/20/04 01:34 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

I have read that pasturizing peat moss casings is preferred because it keeps alive the good microorganisms to help fight contamination. But isn't peat moss non-nutritive and virtually dead matter? I don't see the point in pasturizing it.

I put mine in a loosely covered glass bowl and nuked for 10 minutes (stirring at the halfway point). This probably sterilized it for all intents and purposes. Peat moss is non-nutritive to mushies but I wouldn't be surprised if it harbors lots of micro-organisms out of the bag. I think either will likely work

Pasteurizing it will kill off any fly lavae or nematodes that could be alive. I recommend that or sterilizing your casing mix. You don't want an infestation...
