Cool synchronicity I noticed today: McKenna and Orson S Card
    #2705387 - 05/20/04 01:31 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Orson Scott Card is definitely my favorite author.  His books have the fun and addictiveness of a cheap thriller novel, yet completely change the way you think about the world.  They're incredibly thought provoking, philosophical, and also thrilling.  I've been reading the Alvin Maker series, and noticed that there were a lot of aspects to the book that reminded me of Terence Mckenna's espoused worldview.  As I was reading, one line stood out in my head, i'd never heard it before, but it struck me as particularly insightful and useful.  The line is "If the truth can be told so as to be understood, it will be believed."

I read that line last night.  First thing this morning, I was downloading some songs; among them, The Shamen - Re: Evolution.  The first sample in that song is a clip of Terence Mckenna saying "If the truth can be told so as to be understood, it will be believed."  Wow.

The first two times I heard that phrase in my life, and probably the last, came within 8 hours of eachother

Anyone know the relationship between Orson Scott Card and Terence McKenna?  Who influenced who?  I know he wrote the book containing that quote in the late 80's, right around Terence's time.  Its awesome that two of my favorite thinkers share so many ideas in their respective mediums.

this is like when I heard there was such thing as hubcaps that kept spinning after your car stopped moving I saw a car with them the next day, and the next day, and almost everyday since.

Also, when I read that ants milked aphids, suddenly, like a flash of lightning there were ants milking aphids in every garden I passed.

And yet neither of those is an example of synchronicity :smirk:

I know that McKenna was an avid reader and a fan of good Sci-Fi like William Gibson, Greg Egan and others, no doubt he read some of Card's novels as well and picked up on a particularly good turn of phrase.

card is mormon and takes many of his ideas from the book of mormon, though i haven't read the alvin maker series for some odd reason. A couple of his other books like call to earth and Xenocide definately have major religious overtones to them.

what similarities did they have?

card kicks ass btw

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.---senior doobie

Yea I've always wondered about the mormon thing, I can't see how that mind of his, with its ability to shoot off in all those hypothetical mythologic directions, can fit within such a well defined box as Mormonism offers. Plus, he rips the shit out of established religion all the time in his novels. That's always puzzled me.

card uses his rigorous mormon foundation as an expression of integrity. I can see picking and choosing the true metal from any credo and forming some good personal structure and helping that community too. He has done that.
with existing sub-cultures or communities, you also get the benefit of help at child rearing...
and you can find your place quickly and get on with whatever (in his case writing)
peronally, i am a dropout from my family religion at an early age, and I am not going back ('twasn't christianity either)

I googled the quote, it came from William Blake. Taleswapper, the character in the story, turns out to be William Blake himself. And terence often quotes him. So its probable that they didn't influence eachother, at least in that instance, but insead got the same insight from a third source. It doesn't make it any less trippy that I heard that quote twice in 12 hours though, from the two who have most influenced the way I think
