Glass In Pressure Cooker
    #27053656 - 11/23/20 09:40 AM (3 years, 2 months ago)

Does anyone know if it's safe to pressure cook glass jars?

I read this in reference to autoclaving:
"Secure glass bottle caps before beginning the autoclaving process. Loose caps could cause glass bottles to explode under the pressure."

does that mean if you put a glass jar without an airtight lid in a PC it would explode?

I've pressure cooked a fair bit of glass, and have (almost) always had the lids loose. It's standard practice. If the lid is tight then a vacuum is formed in the jar making it very, very hard to open. And if you forget to loosen the lids, like I did once, you'll find that when you finally get them open, the vacuum sucks in a bunch of air. Luckily this happened in my SAB but if it's definitely not a great thing to happen if you want to max the chance that the contents stay clean!

A couple of things to bear in mind, PCing does stress glass, so make sure there aren't any cracks in the jars. Some people say not to PC standard jam jars but I do and so do others. I've yet to have a problem.

No worries, I should really be studying rather than posting on shroomery...
