Improving cake lifetime when growing in SGFC

Hi all,
I thought I'd share a small idea on growing with PFTEK in a SGFC: why use perlite for humidity? I simple replaced the perlite layer by some wet towels. Ok, sofar so stupid, the great advantage is: every two weeks I can easily take out the towels completely, wash them (hot) and put them back. Unlike perlite, this never gets smelly, and my feeling is that the cakes live longer before they yield to contamination and rot.
Has anyone ever bothered to analyse if such an approach has a statistically significant effect on extending cake lifetime?

Thanks for the reference. That was a long thread to read. Anyway, it seems most people there still stick with perlite or coir. Some claim that the towel option is unhygienic. My impression was different: perlite after some weeks gets smelly. A towel can be changed every week and stays nice and fresh. Which made me wonder: concerning yields, is there an improvement using the towel method?
I have only been counting flushes, and my impression is that I get more flushes with the towel method.
Did anyone else count flushes, or even weigh the yield? That should of course be compared over a number of runs to have reliable data.
Maybe we can start collecting the data here?

Why even use a medium to contain the water? SGFC done water tub method without a medium have saved my butt many times.

People don't care about cakes enough. They're not exactly the method worth logging all that data for
Get a dozen or couple dozen dry grams and that's that
