hey I just wanna know if the rice flour is added to water first and it clumps up, and the i add the vermiculite, I mixed it well but the flour is still in small clumps, will it still work??

Plus the cake seemed kinda damp and compact, I had to press it in cause it had large holes in the middle. You think It will Work out or Not????

hey Hubert. . the "large clumps" aren't necessarily a problem. I had them my first batch and everything colonized fine.

The "pressing down. . " THAT'S a problem. That lack of fluffiness will make colonization take perhaps weeks longer.

Do the substrate over again. Got a kitchenaid? if so, USE IT!!

If not, mix the dry ingredients thoroughly, THEN add the H2O. And use a whisk.

Re-sterilize, and you're good to go. The extra hour you spend now, will mean fruits in probably half the time.

It`s better to first add water to vermiculite, mix, than add brown rice flour last and mix.
This way you won?t get any clumps.

I just need your guys opinion whether i pack the jars a bit too much;

ok i made a mixture for 12 jars but i used it all up in only 11, i left .5in on top for the dry verm. ????? so is it over packed or will it be fine??

thanx

It's easier (and faster I think) to make enough substrate for only 3-4 jars at once and then very carefully drop it into the jars. I don't pack it down AT ALL. I only smooth it out at the end with a VERY light touch. I believe this approach is working, because my B+ jars are 95-99% and it's only Day 10 for them.

I use a wooden spoon in a large bowl. I mix flour and verm then add water a little at a time, and stir the shit out of it. It should be like moist ground beef lol (raw).
